Lady Musgrave Island, Gladstone, Queensland

Welcome to
Lady Musgrave Island

A magical marine haven

A coral cay that looks unassuming at first glance, in reality Lady Musgrave Island is a home, nursery and playground for more than 1,200 species of animals. And it can be all yours for just a few dollars a night.

Located off the coasts of GladstoneBundaberg and Town of 1770, Lady Musgrave Island sits tucked away in its lagoon, providing shelter for manta rays, sea turtles, and the complete cast of the marine “Great 8” including humpback whales in season (July-November).

The island, similar to neighbouring Southern Great Barrier Reef islands, is a significant nesting site for seabirds and turtles who return annually from November to March.

Things to do on Lady Musgrave Island

To chat face-to-face to a local about all the best things to see and do on Lady Musgrave Island, step into a Visitor Information Centre

Accessible by boat, the island can be explored with Lady Musgrave Experience (departing Bundaberg, approximately 2 hours) or 1770 Great Barrier Reef Eco Tours (departing the town of 1770, approximately 1.5 hours).

The Great Barrier Reef is a complex, diverse eco-system that for many is overwhelming at first. To gain a greater understanding you can become a marine biologist for a day, teaming up with a Master Reef Guide on Lady Musgrave Experience. Here you’ll learn how to record reef health observations, take part in data collection and discover the diverse wildlife that frequent the lagoon.

Both tours provide guided island walks that help interpret the flora and fauna, glass bottom boat trips, snorkelling and optional scuba diving

For an unforgettable off-grid experience, camping is available on Lady Musgrave Island from the beginning of Easter Holidays to the day after 26 January every year.

Sleep in the Pisonia forest, wake to the sound of birds and lapping ocean before donning a snorkel and exploring every bommie and ledge of the coral reef surrounding the island. It’s nature at its purest.

Permits starting at $6.65 per night can be booked online through the Department of Environment and Science.
