Get started by launching your boat at the Port Newry Boat Ramp. It’s a four-lane boat ramp, complete with a waiting pontoon for easy collection of any passengers you’re taking with you. And you can have a final toilet stop at the ramp before you head off.

Once your boat is in the water, perform the necessary safety and equipment checks and then you’re ready to head out about five minutes to the mouth of Victoria Creek where you can cast for barramundi and salmon along the river’s edge. This little spot is best at low or outgoing tide.

To broaden your casting area, slowly venture north of Victoria Creek until you reach the mouth of Cluny Creek. Cast along the way to increase your chance of hooking into a barramundi or salmon. Once you’re at the mouth of Cluny Creek, you can also fish for whiting or flathead.

This location is great at low or outgoing tide. Be careful navigating over shallow areas and in and out of the creeks.

After casting for barramundi and salmon off the creeks, head out to sea for reef fishing and trolling. Make your way towards Newry Island. Beyond the northern point you’ll find great conditions for trolling and casting. If you’re fishing in winter, keep an eye out for schools of bait for your opportunity to chase big fish like mackerel and queenfish.

Using live squid and prawn bait, you can anchor up and fish for some reef fish species including tusk fish and coral trout. Alternatively, you can venture around the islands, take in the sights and find the right fishing spot for you and your preferred method.

After fishing around Newry Island, make your way back to Port Newry Boat Ramp. You’ll pass Mausoleum Island, Rocky Island and even Acacia Island. These are beautiful islands to look at, however please do not fish around these islands as they are protected by a Green Zone.

As you make your way into Victoria Creek, try casting along the edges for barramundi and salmon. If you’re returning on low tide, keep an eye out for shallow mud banks and carefully navigate into the ramp.
