Queensland is a place that’s no stranger to the world of art. Creativity thrives here, courtesy of a healthy population of world-renowned galleries, and a series of annual events celebrating the state’s artistic abilities that are scattered across the year.
Get better acquainted with these public events ranging from Indigenous art exhibitions to immersive sculpture festivals with our guide to the best art events in Queensland.
When: Now – 27 April 2025
The next chapter in QAGOMA’s flagship exhibition series - the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT11) – will debut on the gallery floor at the end of 2024. The exhibition will feature the works of over 200 artists from across Australia, Asia and the Pacific – and each piece contributes to a broader story around themes that span intergenerational experiences of migration and labour, environmental protection and more. APT11 will be accompanied by live performances, public discussions, cinema programs and projects for young visitors, along with ongoing community engagement activities and research partnerships.

Those more swayed by science will already be looking forward to the return of World Science Festival Brisbane in March, which is proudly presented by Queensland Museum Network. While the 2025 program is still under wraps, for now, expect fascinating science experiments and workshops, mind-bending conversations with leaders of the industry, and the interactive Art/Science program which blends new ideas and creativity.

The Sunshine Coast's creativity shines during The Horizon Festival. Imagine 10 days (and nights) of visual art, music, theatre, dance, words, film and creative workshops, all in an ode to the wonders of the surrounding Sunshine Coast (Kabi Kabi and Jinibara country). Last year’s event saw the public invited to speak to country directly, take in a performance of Yirinda at Lake Baroon, and take part in a collage workshop with The Butiner. While the festival hub is at Cotton Tree, events will be taking place across the region. Pro tip: don't miss Dawn Awakening, Horizon's signature event.

Proof that not all art is confined to a gallery can be found at the Brisbane Street Art Festival, another of the best arts events in Queensland. Seeking to create a multi-disciplinary platform to explore art in all forms, this annual public art event takes place outdoors across Brisbane City. Think workshops, exhibitions, artist talks and more - all focused on street art.
When: 1 - 31 July 2025
Weaving together food, music, and visual arts is the Mackay Festival of Arts which has now been taking place for 30 years attracting crowds of around 60,000. The ample program includes indoor and outdoor, free and ticketed events, with one of its most popular the Wisely Wine & Food Day. Picture 30 food vendors, a trio of bars, market stalls, and kids' entertainment in lively Queens Park.

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), Cairns
One of the best art events in Queensland is a celebration of the Sunshine State’s original inhabitants - the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair is heralded for its cultural and artistic merits and is a must-visit for those in Tropical North Queensland. Hosted at Cairns Convention Centre this foray into the vibrancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture offers the public a chance to get your hands on a piece of Indigenous art for your own home.
When: 9 - 12 October 2025
If you need another excuse to spend a long weekend in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, The Rangebow Festival is it. This community not-for-profit event takes over the towns of Maleny, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton with film, theatre, music, cultural experiences, cabaret, drag and more – including authentic First Nations cuisine.
When: 30 July - 10 August 2025
Bleach* Festival, Gold Coast
Queensland creatives have long congregated at Bleach* Festival, which focuses on the artistic merits of the coastal community of South East Queensland. Using the Gold Coast’s neighbourhoods and their resident venues as its backdrop (from its North Burleigh Hub to the likes of craft breweries), Bleach journeys through different mediums (musical performances, food and art included) to celebrate the local community.
When: 8 - 9 August 2025
Australian Wearable Art Festival’s Gala is a celebration of art and high-end fashion, showcasing creations from 40 national and international artists. The event is held at Bokarina on the Sunshine Coast; grab your tickets to the two evening shows or matinee performances.

Riverfire, Brisbane Festival
One of the Queensland capital’s most anticipated annual events is Brisbane Festival, a dynamic and immersive explosion of the arts that welcomes performances and experiences across the month of September. ‘The river and iconic city landmarks are our stage as we create the art that enlivens, delights and disrupts’ explains the multi-arts program of the event which encompasses everything from cabaret to food fairs and music.

But few of the best art events in Queensland can compete with the level of immersion offered by Swell Sculpture Festival. The much-adored event is based across Currumbin Beach and sees the sand and neighbouring grassy verge adorned with 65 large-scale sculptures from artists based all over the globe.

North Australian Festival of Arts, Townsville
You’ll find the North Australian Festival of Arts up north in Townsville, an event that embraces the spirit of Fringe Festivals around the globe - that of an inclusive and open-access ethos. The month-long celebration of artistic endeavours showcases Northern Australian talent across the arenas of music, cabaret, workshops, and visual art (among more).
Woodford Folk Festival, Brisbane
When: TBC December 2025 – 1 January 2026
It’s across the silly season that another of the best art events in Queensland takes place - Woodford Folk Festival is the nation’s largest gathering of performers, an eclectic experience that’s made a home for itself on a dedicated 500-acre site dubbed Woodfordia, an hour’s drive north of Brisbane. Envision an event with 400 acts presenting 1834 shows across 27 venues, ranging from circus to music, dance, and entire Children’s Festival, and so much more.
