Where can you find Brisbane’s best breakfast? We’ve scoured the sun-dappled, leafy suburban streets, explored the tucked away CBD laneways, sipped piccolos on the decks of converted Queenslanders, and been everywhere in between to answer one of Brisbane’s toughest questions.
For breakfast served with a generous helping of sunshine, keep reading to find your next Brisbane breakfast go-to. Or why not try them all? Life’s short and Brisbane’s breakfast scene has a lot to offer.
Laneway in the heart of the CBD? Check. Tables bathed in the shade of tropical fruit trees, leafy palms, and towering fig trees? Check. Pretentious Melbourne crowd? Nope. Brisbane’s spin on laneways includes a little more sunshine and a lot more greenery. Stumble down a laneway off George Street to find Coffee Iconic and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. Order the crab sandwich and thank us later.
Where do Australian speciality coffee and innovative breakfast dining intersect? At Inter/section, of course. Behind this spot’s heritage façade, you’ll find exposed brick, high ceilings and a collective set up of some of Brisbane’s best providores. There’s Coffee Anthology pouring coffees, award winning pastry chef Justine Yu’s sweet and savoury pastries, and Fika’s take on elegant, modern Swedish fare. Where else can you find a menu boasting prawn toast benedict and dainty, teddy bear shaped choux pastries?
Have you ever tried balsamic caramel on your avo toast? You’ll find it on the menu at Felix For Goodness, tucked away in the Brisbane CBD. Alongside the classics expect to have your mind blown with a menu that nails the balance between classics and experimental. Think Korean rice cakes served up with pesto cream, roasted broccoli, almond pangrattato, and feta. Come hungry, this is a menu you can’t just pick one dish from.
You won’t find a traditional, sit-down brunch at Agnes Bakery. But, you will find a pairing as iconic as they come: local, barista made coffee and a cabinet filled with fresh-baked pastries. This spot was born from a love of the ancient process of cooking with fire. Each treat is baked fresh each day upon the flames in store. Expect a line spilling out of this heritage cottage’s doors but trust us—the wait is more than worth it.
Farmhouse Kedron is a love letter to the family farms and fresh food producers of Southeast Queensland. Expect an ever-changing menu—honouring the spoils of local producers and farmers—with highlights including the farmhouse potato cake and the granddad of corned beef toasties. Treat the menu like your Sunday morning paper, sip your coffee and read up on profiles of local producers while you pick your breakfast poison. Bliss.
What does a strip tease, morning glory, and a one-night stand have in common? You’ll find them all on the menu at this leafy, north-side locale. Picture a cottage blanketed in lush greenery and feel yourself transported away from their Sandgate Road location and into another world.
Ask any Brisbane southsider their favourite breakfast pick and you’ll be sent in the direction of Café O Mai. Café O Mai is known for their corner-wrapping lines for bahn mi, but don’t sleep on the rest of their menu. Just don’t come expecting fusion. Here, it’s all about uncomplicated, home-style Vietnamese food. See you for a 7am bowl of fragrant pho?
Hidden away in the quiet streets of Moorooka you’ll find Todd & Pup. This local icon does one of the best breakfast line ups on the south side, including teddy bear latte art. Our favourite? Their weekly jaffle specials. Think Bolognese and provolone or pastrami spiced fried chicken. If you’ve got little ones keep this on your list, as you’ll often find a kids eat free promo running.
What’s better than breakfast? Breakfast with an unlimted sleep in. At Deedot Coffee House you can mosey on down for breakfast at 3pm if your heart desires. Sister Café in Hawthorne is a stalwart on the Brisbane breakfast scene. If you prefer your gnocchi served at breakfast, then add this one to the list. Mushroom ragu, bacon crumb, parmesan, truffle oil and a poached egg make their AM pasta offering a must-order. Whatever you order, add their potato rosti on the side. You won’t regret it. Don’t believe us? Take a look at their Instagram.
Bayside breakfast is done right at Citron. Sell this one to your dining companions this way: all day Mediterranean coastal dining in Brisbane. Caprese avo toast, anyone? If you’re not sold yet, these guys do cocktails from 10am. So, let’s make that: Caprese avo toast with an Aperol Spritz on the side, anyone? Sold.
For a waterside breakfast in Brisbane, Tide on the Jetty is a must. Picture this: the morning sun on your skin, coffee in hand, daydreaming which yacht in the marina you’ll buy as your heaped plate of eggs benny arrives at your table. We’d recommend booking a table here to secure the best view.
Come Sunday morning and you’ll find a bevy of Brisbanites making their way to join the queue at Hunter and Scout. And, for good reason. Hidden behind a wrought iron gate, the Hunter and Scout courtyard appears like an oasis in the desert. Shaded by thick, lush palms and hanging plants, you’ll feel like you’re dining in the tropics.
If you had to choose one café to summarise the Brisbane breakfast scene it would be the Corner Store Café. Sitting pretty on an unassuming Toowong street corner, this spot started as a quaint cottage set up and expanded into a sprawling breakfast behemoth. Expect quintessential Queensland indoor-outdoor seating—wrapped around their herb and veggie gardens—with a seasonal menu.
For breakfast that feels more like an adventure, Wild Canary is for you. Venture through Brookfield Gardens Nursey to find this floral breakfast wonderland.
