Guide

You won’t run out of ways to spend your time in Bundaberg, especially if you’re visiting the Sunshine State destination with your significant other. Romance and adventure intertwine up here at the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, a town that remains famous for its rum production, as well as its access to Lady Elliot Island (and its equally idyllic neighbours). No matter how long you have to stay and play, plan your next getaway with this detailed guide to Bundaberg for couples.
For many of us, what we eat while we’re away is just as important as any other part of the holiday. Luckily Bundaberg boasts a handful of reputable eateries that promise to curb your hunger pangs while you’re in town. Cafes in particular are the region’s specialty - grab your partner and make your way for a quality cup of coffee at Windmill Café, the award-winning eatery located in the beautiful Bargara, just a stone’s throw from the beach.Or there’s the Beach Mill, the coffee bar right on the sand itself, and place boasting not only coffee and light snacks, but gelato for the young (or young at heart).
If you’re after something a little more filling, grab brunch at the creative Indulge, a celebration of local produce. Come evening you’ll find flavour aplenty at the family-operated Red Chilli Thai, or make for a truly memorable experience with your partner at one Bundaberg’s favourite fine diners, like Water St Kitchen or Bert’s.
Though memories are promised to be made at Tinaberries. A place to visit for a hands-on food experience, the farm is well-known for its strawberries. Visitors are encouraged to pick your own, before you tuck into a range of strawberry-based goodies at the accompanying cafe.
But it’s not food that Bundaberg is truly famous for, but it's beverages. Namely rum, thanks to the city being built around sugarcane plantations. Bundaberg Rum Distillery is the city’s most famous resident, born back in 1888, and remains a must-visit thanks to its Visitors Rum Experience. When it comes to Bundaberg for couples don’t miss out on the Blend Your Own Rum Experience, an easy way to commemorate your getaway with a special someone.
But this isn’t the only local drinks producer in town - Kalki Moon is a fellow distillery, creating premium Australian gin from local ingredients and produce. While Bundaberg Brewed Drinks makes craft brewed premium soft drinks just down the road, including ever-popular Bundaberg Ginger Beer.
Wine drinker? You can indulge your love of a grape-based drop with a day’s adventure along the Childers Wine Trail, which comprises a trio of different vineyards - Hill Of Promise Winery, Vintners Secret Vineyard, and Cellar Door and Cafe and Brierley Wines.
An adventure to Bundaberg for couples can’t ignore the chance to pay a visit to the nearby Southern Great Barrier Reef. Lady Musgrave Island remains one of the most popular places to spend the day when in town. Just a two hour boat ride from Bundaberg, this tiny coral key is largely untouched and home to an impressive array of native flora and fauna, from birds to marine life. It’s best explored with your beloved as a part of the multi-award-winning (and eco-certified) Lady Musgrave Experience.
Of course there’s still plenty to do in town too. A visit to Mon Repos comes highly recommended - the beach is famous for its annual turtle hatchlings. These days it’s also home to the Turtle Centre, a space dedicated to education on the marine species and their conservation. There’s also the option to greet local producers at Macadamias Australia, or indulge your interest in animals at Splitters Farm, a 160 acre property home to a growing population of rescued farm animals as well as native wildlife.
You could also choose to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, exploring the walking trails that wind their way through Burrum Coast National Park or making the most of the fishing and swimming potential at the tranquil Elliots Head Beach.
Any Bundaberg for couples guide should include a few seriously indulgent accommodation options. Resorts are thankfully plentiful in these parts, with two of the region’s most outstanding luxury hotels including Kellys Beach Resort and Manta Bargara Resort.
Though some lovebirds may be intrigued by the cluster of glamping options available. Splitters Farm has two options to choose from - a safari-style tent complete with two rooms and in-built bathroom, as well as a vintage glamper van for the retro enthusiasts out there.
Little can compare to the chance to sleep on the reef offered by the Lady Musgrave Experience. The permanent three-tiered pontoon not only has liveaboard-style bunk accommodation below deck, but Upper Deck Island View Queen Glamping Beds which will see you go to sleep just metres from the coral. Make your island experience even more unforgettable by indulging in the extras on offer on the island, like a picnic hamper enjoyed on one of the island’s private beaches.
