On the hunt for school holidays activities in Townsville that'll keep the kids busy? From meeting local wildlife to exploring our reef or tackling the city's hiking trails, these ideas are sure to burn off some energy and expand curious minds along the way: because some of life's best lessons happen outside the classroom.

1. Climb the castle

Castle Hill's pink glow dominates Townsville's skyline - so why not tackle it with the kids in tow? There's plenty of routes to the summit and you're sure to work up a sweat, but the panoramic views at the top will be worth it. If little legs can't quite go the distance, you can also drive to the top.

2. Learn about our Indigenous culture

Head up the coast to the grand Mungalla Station homestead for a day immersed in 45,000 years of Nywaigi Aboriginal Culture. The kids will be amazed with ancient stories, face painting and the chance to learn how to throw a spear - and you can even learn more about how they're regenerating local wetlands to save endangered species.

3. Explore the reef

Just a hop from the mainland, Magnetic Island is a haven for families who love the outdoors: discover hiking trails, spot rock wallabies on the beaches, and go for a snorkel. A few bays around the island have their own snorkel trail, or head on a boat tour led by Aquascene's Master Reef Guide to discover secluded locations and spectacular sights you never would have otherwise.

Have older kids and a whole day on the reef? Skip time on land and explore the crystal clear waters of Lodestone Reef with Adrenalin Snorkel and DiveBefore starting, the kids will get schooled on snorkelling techniques and learn about the reef’s ecosystem.

4. Meet the (furry) locals

Set in 25 acres of natural bushland and featuring over 100 species of Australian animals, Billabong Sanctuary is the ultimate Aussie wildlife experience for the kids - and their Vacation Care days are exclusive to the school holidays.

Watch their faces light up with excitement as they touch a scaly python, tickle a wombat, pat a dingo, hand-feed a cassowary, or closely watch koalas in the gumtrees. Don't miss the daily croc shows, or the chance to hear park rangers give inspiring talks about conservation efforts: one visit and you might have a future wildlife warrior in the family!

5. Bliss out along The Strand

Cool off during sticky days at The Strand. There's a water park, rock pool, beach swimming plus multiple playgrounds to keep the crew entertained for hours.

6. Spend a day at the museum

Curious minds will be fascinated with a visit to the Museum of Tropical Queensland in the heart of Tonwsville. Exploring life in the tropics from prehistoric times to modern day, there are exhibits that tell the stories of World-Heritage rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, famous shipwrecks and more - with plenty of opportunity for hands-on learning and school holiday workshops too.
