Tropical North Queensland AUS

Welcome to
Mission Beach

A hidden gem of the tropics

When you visit Cairns & Great Barrier Reef, make it your mission to go off the beaten tourist track. Sprawling over 14 kilometres of golden coastline, the coastal village of Mission Beach is home to palm fringed stretches, laidback cafes and World Heritage sites the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics rainforest.

A two-hour road trip from Cairns, there’s plenty of natural beauty to experience. A nature-lover’s playground with plenty of walking trails and pristine beaches, you’ll be spoilt for choice for what to do.

Things to do in Mission Beach

To chat face-to-face to a local about all the best things to see and do in Mission Beach, step into a Visitor Information Centre

Here, you can laze in the sun, swim in the azure waters, trek to the summit of Bicton Hill, spot a cassowary in the wild, mountain bike along the Musgrave Trial in Djiru National Park, raft down the Tully river, or chow down on fresh produce at the local eateries. You can also tour with Mission Beach Dive and explore the outer Great Barrier Reef without another day-tripper in sight.

Adventure isn't limited here. Beyond the beach, you’ll find some of Queensland’s most underrated places and local havens. Catch the Mission Beach Water Taxi from the mainland and soak up some island time on Dunk Island

If you’re up for a hike, set your sights on Mt Kootaloo first. The steep 7km-return track takes you to the island’s highest point with panoramic views of the Family Islands. To cool down after hiking, follow the track back down to the Muggy Muggy Beach and snorkel in the fringing reef.

Mission Beach is the perfect launch pad to waterfalls galore. Access nearby Milla Milla, Mungalli, Ellinjaa and Zillie Falls by the Bruce Highway, just to name a few.
