Hiking and camping enthusiasts take note - this place is your idea of heaven. Hinchinbrook Island has garnered a reputation for its walking trails, and is home to one of the world’s best. The most recognised is the famed Thorsborne Trail, running a 32-kilometre stretch through forests varying from milky pine to palm figs. It’s not just the greenery that will catch your gaze here, but the 66 bird species, 22 butterfly species, and endless array of fish and crustaceans that call the region home. That’s not mentioning the turtles and dugongs among the bounty of marine life that live in the neighbouring waters.
But Hinchinbrook Island isn’t just best seen by land. Grab a snorkel or a kayak and make your way by sea. Paddle along the long sandy stretches, cooling off with a dip and a foray through the coral reef which fringes the shoreline. After a day’s adventure, sleep out under the stars, where remote bush camping spots are peppered throughout the national park. Or for those after just a taster of the island's charms, 90-minute scenic flights are available from Townsville.
