Outback Queensland

Welcome to
Longreach

The heart of the outback

Draw a line through the centre of Queensland, and you’ll come to Longreach: the outback town on the Thomson River, so named for its position on its longest reach.

Its river may have been what first drew its population to settle in the centre of Queensland, but it’s the promise of country hospitality that keeps visitors coming back to this outback town, whether it be by road, rail or air.

Even without exploring the other towns in the Outback’s central west like Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo and Winton, "the heart of the outback" (Longreach) has enough to keep you occupied on an outback adventure.

Out here, adventure is always on the agenda, with stagecoach rides galloping through the bush, the opportunity to walk on the wing of a Boeing 747 and live stockman’s shows running daily.

Big ideas have been born out of Longreach and the town has more than one classroom for you to learn from those who shaped early Australian history.

Spend your days celebrating the birthplace of Qantas, visiting the largest classroom in Australia, and discovering pioneering history by following the historic footsteps of early settlers.

Plan your activities around the sun’s movements, whether it be catching sunrise from your outdoor clawfoot bath, escaping the heat inside a famous outback pub or watching the sun slip beyond the horizon at Starlight’s Lookout.

Finish your day by swapping peak hour traffic for a cruise along the Thomson River by paddle wheeler, watching as the sky turns an ombre hue of burnt orange and cicadas start their evening chorus.

Forget tuning into television at night, your evening agenda most likely involves tuning into bush poetry over a freshly cooked camp oven, served under a ceiling of stars.

Sound like bliss? No, it sounds like Longreach.
