To chat face-to-face to a local about all the best things to see and do in Hervey Bay, step into a Visitor Information Centre.
There’s nowhere better to go whale watching than in the first ever World Whale Heritage Site – a recognition awarded for the region’s commitment to conservation and protection.
Witness migratory humpback whales playfully salute with their flippers and nurture their young calves in the calm protected waters from July to October every year. Expect up-close natural encounters and look these gentle giants straight in the eye from the platform of a whale watching tour boat, or while snorkelling.
For a truly memorable experience, visit during the Whale Festival’s Paddle Out for Whales. Hundreds of locals float into the bay on surfboards, kayaks, and SUPs to raise awareness for whale welfare and the conservation of the marine environment.
You’ll find showstoppers out of the water in Hervey Bay, too.
Take your pick of world-class cafes and restaurants, just make sure you tuck into the local Hervey Bay scallops. Here they’re pulled straight from the ocean and onto your plate.
Find your spot on the sand at the family friendly beaches dotted along the coastline, throw a fishing line in off historic Urangan Pier, stand-up-paddle board in the bay, and shop local at the weekend markets.
Hervey Bay is also the jump-off point for your 4WD adventure to Fraser Island – but there’s plenty of ways to see Fraser in a day too.
