Guide

Sand and sea enthusiasts will be delighted with the news that the world’s best beach has been discovered, and it’s in Queensland.
One of The Whitsundays’ most famous residents, Whitehaven Beach is consistently ranked among the world's top beaches due to its picturesque stretch of sand.
If you’re not yet familiar with the award-winning wonder, we’ve put together this guide to get you better acquainted.
Thanks to its breathtaking beauty, a combination of white silica sands (98% silica to be exact), and aquamarine waters, Whitehaven is the most famous beach in the Whitsundays, if not the state of Queensland. This 7-kilometre stretch sits on Whitsunday Island, among an archipelago 74 islands-strong.
Protected by the Whitsunday Islands National Park, and forming a part of the Great Barrier Reef, this place is a treat to the senses - not only has been voted the world’s most eco-friendly beach, but one of the cleanest. But it’s not just the beach itself which is worth exploring with any visit - neighbouring Hill Inlet boasts plenty of marine life, and the Hill Inlet Lookout has arguably the best views in the region (just look for a tour that includes a walk this way).
When it comes to Whitehaven Beach accommodation, most visitors choose to stay on the mainland, at the gateway to the islands, Airlie Beach. Accommodation options are rife here and suit all kinds of budgets, particularly those seeking to save thanks to a plethora of backpackers.
If you’re after a slightly more sumptuous place to stay, unforgettable memories promise to be made at the cluster of luxury resorts spread across the neighbouring islands, like the world-renowned qualia on Hamilton Island, or Intercontinental Hayman Island Resort nearby. You can choose to spend the night on Whitehaven with your family, where you’ll be able to pitch a tent at the National Park Campground at Southern End, right on the sand of the iconic beach. Or seek seclusion on the other side of the island at the elevated Chance Bay campground.
Day trips to Whitehaven Beach are the specialty of the region, taking place across a range of ferries and high-speed catamarans from the likes of Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island. Whitehaven Xpress and ZigZag Whitsundays are two of the most convenient options to make your way direct to Whitehaven Beach, though you may prefer the adventures of Ocean Rafting, and Red Cat Adventures, or the longer trips offered by Wings Sailing Charters.
You can also choose to splurge on a little luxury, experiencing Whitehaven Beach in style with a privately chartered yacht, helicopter or seaplane - try Air Whitsundays.
When planning your trip to Whitehaven Beach, keep in mind that there are certain times of year that may be better than others when it comes to conditions. It’s best to greet the world’s most beautiful beach in spring (from September through to November) when the temperatures are at their most comfortable for guests and the weather relatively dry. Though if you’re an avid animal lover you may be better suited to making the journey between June and September, when whale watching season takes place.
No matter the case, don’t forget to bring your packing essentials - think plenty of sun-safe additions like a hat, sunscreen, and (of course) swimwear to cool off in the aquamarine waters of the region.
