The world’s largest coral reef system is something you have to experience on a trip to Queensland. You can fly over it, dive beneath it – and even sleep on it – but some of these can cost big, too.

If you’re looking for affordable ways to meet the reef that’ll leave your wallet with enough wiggle room for happy hour at the day’s end, look at these ideas for how to see the Great Barrier Reef on a budget.

After all, there’s a lot of must-do experiences to have while you’re here.

Take a low cost reef tour to the Low Isles

Low Isles | Great Barrier Reef on a budget

Be mesmerised by the colour of life on the Great Barrier Reef at Low Isles, a small coral cay surrounded by 55 acres of reef. This legendary little patch of nature’s finest lies just 15 kilometres off the coast of Port Douglas, making it the perfect destination if you’re short on time, and short on budget too.

Several operators can take you to Low Isles, however Reef Sprinter’s Low Isles Reef Tour is one of the most affordable options. It takes just 15 thrilling minutes to get there, and you’ll score 90 minutes to snorkel the waters and reef before you, or head out on a glass bottom boat tour. This is a great spot for snorkelling and turtle-spotting with kids thanks to its sheltered waters. Tours depart three times daily (9am, 11:30am and 2pm) and just 14 people max on each boat means you’ll have plenty of room to explore and soak up the serenity of the Great Barrier Reef.

Get on island-tour-time

Green Island | Great Barrier Reef on a budget

The Great Barrier Reef stretches its way up the Queensland coastline, and it’s dotted with some pretty special islands that’ll land you in the heart of reef action. If your budget doesn’t stretch far enough to stay at an island resort, you can experience the fun of sea and sand between your toes on island day tours.

In Cairns? Jump on a full day tour to Green Island with Big Cat Reef Cruises. This coral cay boasts its own national park, home to rainforest, white sand beaches to laze on, and coral reef right offshore to explore at your leisure during five hours of island time. Your tour includes lunch, plus the option for a semi-submersible boat tour and SNUBA.

Nearby, Fitzroy Island is surrounded by coral reef that you can explore in a day trip. The Fitzroy Flyer ride will get you there in just 45 minutes, where you can snorkel the reef, visit Nudey Beach (named one of Australia’s best beaches) and take a guided tour of the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. Adults tickets run for $65 (half day tour) and $85 (full day tour).

If you’re exploring the Great Barrier Reef on a budget from Townsville, make your way to Maggie. An easy DIY adventure, SeaLink Queensland offers packages from $40 per adult ($20 per child) that includes return ferry and an all day public bus pass that’ll help get you between the bays and beaches once you arrive on the island. Bring your own snorkel gear (or rent on the island) then discover the fringing reef on the self-guided snorkel trails. There’s plenty of affordable accommodation options if you want to make a night of it.

Holidaying a little further south? Great Keppel Island is the jewel of the Capricorn Coast, conveniently located near Yeppoon for an easy day trip, especially with the kids in tow. Take an island transfer with Keppel Konnections or Freedom Fast Cats (they also offer day tours) and you’ll be left to explore the 17 pristine beaches, bushwalking trails, and some of the best live corals that you can snorkel, just offshore. Don’t want to go home just yet? Take it easy and book into the budget-friendly Great Keppel Island Holiday Village.

Explore the outer reef

Dive beneath to explore the outer reef and you’ll be immersed in a whole new underwater world of colour as schools of fish zoom through coral gardens.

Reef Experience offers affordable reef day tours from Cairns that includes snorkelling two outer reef locations during five hours of reef time, one free scuba dive, free glass bottom boat tours, plus breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day. Or get to know the reef’s diverse ecosystem and indigenous heritage through the eyes of local indigenous tour operators Dreamtime Dive and Snorkel, which will also take you to two fantastic dive sites.

Camp on an island in the middle of the reef

On a serious budget? Forget about island resorts (though Queensland is home to some incredible spots to luxuriate), and secure yourself some island time another way.

Swap five stars for a billion – and sleep under them, by pitching your tent on some of the most spectacular islands in Australia. With coral reef lying just offshore, and plenty of sand to explore on it, these island camping destinations will give you a budget Great Barrier Reef experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.

If you’re visiting our tropical north, sleepy Mission Beach is well worth a detour thanks to a hidden gem: Dunk Island. Perfect for nature-lovers and easily accessible thanks to the water taxi, you’ll practically have the island to yourself with just eight campsites. Here’s everything you need to know about camping on Dunk Island, and what to do once you’re there.

There’s plenty of island camping in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, but Lady Musgrave Island is jewel in the crown. A tiny coral cay home to some of Queensland’s most vibrant reef, your playground will be the 3,000 acres of coral lagoon, home to manta rays, turtles, and marine life you’ve never seen before. Only 40 people can camp here at a time, so expect real peace and quiet as well as bringing everything you need for your stay (there are no facilities on the island).

Learn to scuba dive on a liveaboard

Learning to scuba dive is a big ticket item no matter which way you cut it. But here in Queensland you can get out of a stuffy classroom and right onto the reef with Reef Encounter, offering liveaboard experiences for scuba students (as well as those already certified).

Sign up for a three day intensive course, and you’ll complete eight training dives on the Great Barrier Reef with a class ratio of one dive instructor to every four students. Packages include all food, accommodation, scuba gear and training – as well as the experience of a lifetime.

Another unique way to dive the reef on a budget is on a dive safari; you’ll dive, camp, and have an under-the-radar island all to yourself.

Kayak through the Whitsundays

Salty Dog Kayak | Great Barrier Reef on a budget

Quench your thirst for adventure – on a budget – with a half-day Whitsundays kayak tour. Whether you’re a newbie or have paddled before, there’s no better place to get on the water, especially when you’ll be kayaking over fringing coral reef, exploring tropical islands, and getting up close with marine life and birds that call these turquoise waters home. From July-September you might even spot a humpback whale or two on their migration.

Rent your own private island

Pumpkin Island Eco Retreat - Southern Great Barrier Reef | Great Barrier Reef on a budget

Live like a millionaire, without the price tag, and book a private stay on Pumpkin Island. Nestled amongst the Keppel Islands just 14-kilometres off the coast of Yeppoon, this eco-friendly, carbon-positive island will capture your attention the moment your boat pulls into the jetty. Even before you snorkel the reef right from the beach or watch the sun go down from your own beach bar.

With seven cottages on the island, split the cost with a group of family or friends and you’ll spend less here per night for your own island than you would an inner-city hotel. Here’s how to do it, and what to do once you arrive.

Set sail with your own crew

Whitsundays bareboating near Hook Island | Great Barrier Reef on a budget

Travelling with a group? It can be more affordable to captain your own yacht and sail through the Whitsundays than to stay at a resort. This is the best place in the world to go bareboating (you don’t even need a boat license). Explore the islands, private coves and secluded reefs by day, then drop anchor and sleep on your own floating hotel by night.

Prefer to set sail with the experts? Whitsundays Sailing offers a day sailing adventure for under $100, where you can kick back and relax, snorkel the reef, and meet fellow travellers while you’re at it.
