You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to how to spend your time during a Gold Coast getaway. The famed sandy stretch overflows with potential, which no doubt can be overwhelming for first timers. To help you plan your holiday, here you’ll find a gathering of the best things to do on the Gold Coast.

Greet the theme parks

The Gold Coast is well-recognised as the home of Australia’s best theme parks. You’ll find a cluster of these spaces sitting within arm’s reach of Surfers Paradise. Unleash your inner adrenaline-junkie with a day spent at local institutions Warner Bros. Movie World, Dreamworld, Wet’n’Wild or Sea World among many others.

Hit the surf

One of the best things to do on the Gold Coast for first timers is undoubtedly to learn to surf. After all, this golden strip of beautiful beaches is considered home to some of the world’s best swell, and more than a few pros. There are plenty of different surf schools to choose from depending on your location - Surfers Paradise and Currumbin Alley are home to some of the best.

Wander the national park

Immerse yourself in the great outdoors with a day spent meandering the bushwalking tracks that line the region’s national parks. There are a bundle to choose from, but Burleigh Head National Park may be the most popular thanks to its proximity to town and picturesque coastal walk. Or head further afield to Lamington National Park, known for its ancient Gondwana Rainforests.

Connect with local culture

Get better acquainted with the original inhabitants of the region with a visit to the Jellurgal Aboriginal Culture Centre. With Welcome to Country ceremonies, Aboriginal dance performances, and guided tours around the region, the educational space is devoted to sharing the story of the Yugambeh language-speaking people of the Gold Coast.

Spend the day at the beach

Don’t miss out on a chance to experience some of Australia’s best beaches - one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast is simply swim and sunbathe at its outstanding sandy stretches. While Surfers Paradise may be the most famous, Burleigh, Currumbin, Kirra and Nobby Beach are some of the most popular, particularly for families, not to mention child-friendly Tallebudgera Creek.

One of the best things to do on the Gold Coast for first timers who consider themselves foodies is to make a visit to the region’s best restaurants. Stand-out venues are scattered through town (like Restaurant Labart) but the true institutions lie metres back from the sand. Rick ShoresBurleigh Pavilion and The Tropic are a trio of must-do eateries.

Here are more great places to dine by the water.

Celebrate sunset from the rooftop

Another of the best things to do on the Gold Coast is the chance to enjoy a sunset, drink in hand, from one of the region’s many rooftop bars. Justin’s Rooftop at Justin Lane, Burleigh Pavilion, and The Island are some of the most popular places to grab a tipple.

Meet local wildlife

Introduce yourself to local flora and fauna with a trip to the iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, a heritage-listed zoo built back in 1947. It’s here you can frolic with local and exotic creatures, from dingoes to pandas, or visit the animal hospital where injured native animals are cared for and rehabilitated. There’s also David Fleay Wildlife Park, a tranquil space devoted to showcasing native Queensland species.

Join the locals for a picnic

There may be nowhere more popular to enjoy an afternoon beverage and a bite to eat than Burleigh Hill. It’s on this grassy patch that you can throw down a blanket to join the community who cluster in the evenings to watch the surf, and enjoy a picnic with friends and family.

Take in the view from above

Make your way to the Skypoint Observation Deck to take in a birdseye view of the district. With unrivalled 360-degree views of coast and hinterland both this is one of the best things to do while on the Gold Coast. Feeling adventurous? Take on the country’s highest external building climb with the Skypoint Climb.

Thrill yourself with a jet boat ride

Remember to hold on tight when you join one of the Gold Coast’s extreme jetboating options. Jetboat ExtremeOcean Jet Boating and Paradise Jet Boating will take you on a high-speed adventure along the region’s waterways and neighbouring Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Just one of the adventurous things to do while you're here.

Discover the green behind the gold

Everyone knows “the Goldie” for its beaches, but there’s a gorgeous hinterland to explore a short, scenic drive away. Take a breather from the bustle and head for the hills, where you’ll find beguiling mountain villages, local wineries, fascinating art galleries, primordial rainforest, and breathtaking views.
