Revered for its breathtaking landscape, K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) has to be seen to be believed. The world’s largest sand island and World Heritage site boasts incredible examples of natural beauty – 75 kilometres of golden beaches, countless freshwater lakes, soaring sand dunes and crystal-clear inland creeks are just the tip of the iceberg– but one location in particular has become one of the island’s most iconic. Here’s how to visit the Champagne Pools of K’gari.

One of the most beautiful natural wonders on K’gari, the Champagne Pools are a collection of natural volcanic swimming pools nestled right on the island’s coastline. Acquiring their name from the bubbles created by the crashing waves at high tide, the saltwater pools are left ‘fizzing’. Think of them as Mother Nature’s spa – just with ocean views…

Featuring two distinct pools, the Champagne Pools are unbeatable when you want to cool off. At low tide, each of the saltwater pools are protected from K’gari’s infamous rough surf, making it ideal for families looking for a safe place to swim.

Why they’re well worth the visit

Good looks aside, the Champagne Pools are a great snorkelling spot at low tide; dozens of colourful fish get caught in the pools until the tide turns. Surrounding the pools is a pristine stretch of beach as well as a dedicated boardwalk that hugs the rugged coastline and dishes up magnificent ocean views.

For even more breathtaking scenery, make sure you stop off at Indian Heads to spot the local marine life. Dolphins and humpback whales (particularly during the annual whale migration between August and November) are often seen jumping out of the waves.

How to get there

Located along 75 Mile Beach, north of Indian Head on the island’s northeast coast, K'gari's Champagne Pools are easy to access via 4WD – the area is also well signed as you hit the dedicated sand track (so you can’t miss the turnoff).

Don’t have your own wheels? There is a myriad of exceptional local tour guides that include a visit to K'gari’s Champagne Pools. Fraser Explorer Tours and K’gari Fraser Island Adventures guided and self-guided options offer the freedom to experience the Champagne Pools and Fraser’s top attractions at your own pace, while Nomads and Pippies are the perfect self-drive tag along (their knowledgeable guides a mere car or two ahead). Discovery Fraser Island even offer private charters – great if you’re a larger visiting group.

Planning a day trip? Catch the 30-minute ferry from the mainland at River Heads (just north of Hervey Bay) direct to K’gari’s Wanggoolba Creek. You’ll need a 4WD to get around K’gari, so be sure to hire (or BYO) before you go.

When’s the best time to visit

Champagne Pools, K’gari

A visit to K’gari is beautiful at any time of year, with the Champagne Pools idyllic year-round, thanks (in part) to Queensland’s 300+ days of sunshine. Summer (and school holidays) mean the pools can get busy, so if you prefer a visit on the peaceful side, dip a toe outside of peak tourist season. No matter when you visit, low tide is when the pools are most popular.

To ensure you get a prime spot of sand adjacent to the pools, arrive early to ensure you bag the best spot, and definitely hang around for sunset. It’s magic.

How to do the Champagne Pools like a pro

Make the most of a visit by packing a picnic for the day. Stop off for supplies at nearby Orchid Beach township and remember to bring an umbrella or beach tent with you, as shade is minimal when searching for a reprieve from the midday sun.

If you’re on a self-drive around the island, brushing up on your off-road 4WD skills is a great way to get adventure ready. The Australian Offroad Academy offer a variety of short courses to get you confident and self-sufficient before you hit the sand.
