How-to

One of the lesser-known beachfront destinations on the Sunshine Coast, Moffat Beach in Caloundra has a distinct vibe that differentiates it from its more famous neighbours like Kings Beach and Dicky Beach. While long popular among locals and beachgoers from South East Queensland, Moffat Beach has remained a lesser-known hidden gem for interstate and overseas visitors until recently. But with increased accommodation options, one of Australia’s best craft breweries, and a burgeoning reputation as one of the top away-from-the-crowds beachside destinations under 90 minutes’ drive from Brisbane, it’s fast becoming a Sunshine Coast favourite.
For holidaymakers searching for a sandy spot in the sun that’s off the tourist trail but offers an excellent array of accommodation, ample wining and dining options, safe swimming and plenty of peace and quiet, the tree-lined serenity of Moffat Beach will surely prove appealing.

With its countless resorts, holiday apartments and hotels stretching along the Caloundra Headland to catch summer sea breezes, Kings Beach has been the jewel in Caloundra’s accommodation crown. While Moffat Beach has often been overlooked by holidaymakers in favour of Kings Beach — and neighbouring Shelly Beach and Dicky Beach — the sleepy beach town has quietly developed over the years and now boasts an accommodation selection to suit all holidaymakers.
From families looking for a quiet beach destination with kid-friendly swimming to couples planning a romantic getaway far from the hustle and bustle of the Sunshine Coast’s busy tourist strips, Moffat Beach has something for all where accommodation is concerned.

With its perfect point break, Moffat Beach has always attracted a surfing crowd, but there’s plenty to do in this paradisiacal part of the Sunshine Coast without paddling out.
Explore Caloundra’s picturesque coastline on the Caloundra Coastal Walk which stretches from Golden Beach to Mooloolaba Beach. The 25-kilometre walk takes in the top beaches as well as several important historic and heritage-listed sites. Take a detour and stop off for a drink or bite to eat along the way, or picnic at Caloundra Headland and catch the sea breeze.
While Moffat isn’t a patrolled beach and you’ll need to be wary of the waves, the sandy inlet of Tooway Creek offers family-friendly swimming. With its calm, clear waters trickling into the ocean, it’s the perfect place to cool off and enjoy a stress-free splash in secluded surrounds. Its gentle, serene waters also make it popular for kayaking and stand up paddleboarding.
Peaceful and serene with shade provided courtesy of the pine and pandanus trees that line the shore, breezy Moffat is one of the Sunshine Coast’s top picnic spots. Picnic shelters and barbecues are available at Eleanor Shipley Memorial Park which provides ocean views over the beach. The park has become a popular spot for wedding ceremonies and other events.
Moffat has garnered a reputation as one of the top dog-friendly beaches on the Sunshine Coast. Off-leash access is between 4pm and 8am daily (Beach Access 270 to 276) but if you and your four-legged companion fancy dipping your toes and paws outside of these hours, take a short drive to Currimundi or Wurtulla Beach which offer dedicated off-leash sections.
As with accommodation at Moffat Beach, its local bars, cafes and restaurants have quietly carved out a unique identity as a thriving food and drink destination that’s worth travelling for. Like most of the Sunshine Coast, Moffat’s wining and dining scene doesn’t stay up late, but it certainly rewards those who take an early evening stroll to explore its thriving selection of local establishments.
Sunny's @ Moffat is located along the casual row of bars, cafes and restaurants that line Seaview Terrace with views overlooking Moffat Beach. A licenced restaurant and cafe, this popular restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner and offers a modern Australian menu with an excellent array of mains and lighter options, including plenty of fresh local seafood.
Also located on Seaview Terrace’s restaurant row, Cafe By the Beach provides both alfresco and indoor dining with a relaxed beachside atmosphere. Along with excellent coffee, the fully licenced establishment serves a selection of Asian, Italian and modern Australian fare. Popular among locals and holidaymakers alike, Cafe By the Beach is family and pet-friendly.
Blackwater Trading Co is another top choice with ocean views, sea breezes and excellent food and drink options on Seaview Terrace. Bustling in mornings and on weekends, it offers a large alfresco dining area, live musicians in the evening and a sizable menu that provides something for everyone. The six craft beer taps often showcase local craft beer offerings.
Moffat Beach is home to one of the top craft breweries in Australia — Moffat Beach Brewing Co. Winner of the Independent Brewers Association award for the best small brewery in Australia (2018), the microbrewery is quickly garnering a solid reputation for the brewing magic it conjures at its casual beachside location on Seaview Terrace. With 12 beers rotating across its six taps — brewed on-site from scratch with zero preservatives — there’s something for all, from light summer ales and tart sours to hazy NEIPAs and amber IPAs.

Long a favourite among locals craving a caffeine fix, The Pocket Espresso Bar on Seaview Terrace has expanded its menu (and opening hours) and is renowned as one of the best cafes on the Sunshine Coast. Offering a relaxed and friendly vibe with courtyard and alfresco dining, it bustles with a mix of locals and holidaymakers at breakfast and lunch seven days a week, as well as dinners (Friday through Sunday). A comprehensive menu awaits, including kid-friendly fare, with the tacos, burgers and Asian dishes all top choices.
