Pet-friendly camping grounds in Queensland

Before heading out on any pet-friendly camping adventure in Queensland, it’s worth scouting out where the local off-leash dog areas/parks/beaches are found. You can never be too prepared—and your pup will love the freedom.

Minjerribah Camping, North Stradbroke Island 

Dogs and owners alike will relish the fresh, salty air when you pitch a tent along Main or Flinders Beach on North Stradbroke Island. You’ll need a reliable 4WD and some beach driving know-how to get to these campgrounds, but getting to North Stradbroke Island is as easy as catching the vehicle ferry from Cleveland.

Like the majority of pet-friendly camping grounds in Queensland, all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, but there are ample places to let them run ragged. There are two off-leash areas on North Stradbroke, Home Beach, between Rocky Point and Rocky Headland in front of Point Lookout Hotel, and Skatebowl Park in Dunwich, between the skate bowl and the fenced off area.

Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area camping, Rainbow Beach 

Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area Camping is the ultimate beachside getaway. Just a 15-minute drive from Rainbow Beach, and with easy access to World-Heritage-Listed K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), this one pet-friendly camping ground in Queensland you’ll keep coming back to for years to come.

A sand bar dotted with established pine trees and on the cusp of the incomparable Cooloola National Park and surrounding coastline, here you can pitch your tent right next to the ocean. While dogs must stay on-leash at all times, your furry family member will love the soft sand and gentle waves as much as you.

Tip: You will need a 4WD vehicle to access the sandy strip at Inskip. If you do decide to BYO dog, make sure to adhere to the campsite rules and note that dogs are not permitted in the nearby Cooloola Recreation Area.

Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park, Sunshine Coast 

Set in three hectares of pristine beachside (but just a 10-minute drive to Maryoochydore) Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park is one of the most highly sought-after pet-friendly camping grounds in Queensland. Peaceful, leafy, and featuring all the glamorous camping essentials like power and BBQ facilities, it’s walking distance to local fishing spots, bike tracks and beaches. The ideal holiday spot for active families and furballs.

Tip: Two dogs per campsite are permitted at Mudjimba as long as they are on leashes at all times. Extra preparedness will work in your favour; all owners must submit a dog application form directly to the grounds when booking your stay.

Flannery Reserve, Scenic Rim 

Nestled on the edge of Mount Barney National Park, Flannery Reserve is an excellent camp site for the seasoned camper. Surrounded by ancient bushland and forest and at the foot of Mount Barney, it is rare to find a pet-friendly camping ground in the Scenic Rim with such views.

Swim in the cool, gentle currents of the Logan River (dogs can jump in too, as long as they’re harnessed), take a walk through the quiet forests or just relax in nature.

Tip: take full advantage of the heated showers, BBQ areas, and kiosk—which sells a number of camping essentials (including Tim Tams). Just ensure your four-legged guest is on a lead at all times.

Pet-friendly camping on the Central Coast

Amamoor State Forest, near Gympie

Approximately 20kms south-west of Gympie, pack your tent and your furry friend for the forest adventure of a lifetime in Amamoor State Forest.

Set up camp amongst the soaring pine trees, then set your sights on the many forest walks; you’ll relish exploring the glass-like creeks and trickling streams with your pup. Peaceful doesn’t even begin to cut it in this part of the world.

Tip: The campsite features multiple BBQ spots, picnic tables and campfire facilities—perfect for tasting marshmallows—so be sure to pack your favourite campsite treats.

Benarkin State Forest, South Burnett area

Head to Clancys camping ground in the Benarkin State Forest; this is where you and your pup are free to enjoy the spoils of pet-friendly camping.

The surrounding area is bursting with iconic Queensland landscapes; lush rainforest and eucalypt forests that edge onto crystal clear creeks. It’s picture perfect—and yours to explore.

Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Resort, Mackay 

Are you and your furry friend are looking for pet-friendly beachfront camping in Queensland? Make your way to Bucasia, just outside of Mackay, for absolute beachside camping.

Surrounded by tropical palms, parkland and sandy coastline, every way to you look is green and gold. Pet-friendly camping in Tropical North Queensland

Palm Cove Holiday Park, Tropical North Queensland 

Situated just metres from the idyllic beach of Palm Cove, and just a 30-minute drive north of Cairns city centre, pack your pup and make tracks for Palm Cove Holiday Park. Start your mornings overlooking the waters of Tropical North Queensland, maybe even catch a glimpse of dolphins on the horizons, as hundred-year-old palm trees gently blowing in the breeze.

The region is famous for its pristine bushwalks and secluded beaches, and while dogs are not permitted to enter the Daintree, Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach and the quaint village of Kuranda are on your doorstep. As long as your dog is on a lead and with you at all times, your free to explore.

Tip: Bring ingredients to make your favourite camping meal in the campsite kitchen where you can cook up a storm, then make your way to the campsite TV room for movie nights by the sea.
