There’s something truly soul-stirring about a hot air balloon experience. It might be the sense of peace, drinking in the silence as the morning sun bathes the horizon in a warm glow and wildlife begins to wake for the day ahead. It might be the serenity of floating above landscapes at first light, knowing your one of the few people up to witness it. It might be the thrill of lifting from the ground to soar anywhere from a few hundred feet to a few thousand feet, powered only by air.

It’s probably a combination of all three.

Considered the world's oldest and most romantic form of flight, hot air ballooning is a safe and unique way to experience Queensland’s majestic landscapes. Whether you’re heading for the rainforests of the tropical north, or our countryside and coastline in the south-east, here are the best places to hot air balloon in Queensland.

Take flight in the tropics

Imagine taking off in darkness, rising to witness the sun appear on the horizon as you glide silently over the lush valleys and farmlands of the Atherton Tablelands, west of Cairns. Watch in awe as low lying clouds and fog clear to reveal panoramic, 360-degree vistas over this special part of the Wet Tropics.

Back down at ground level, celebrate with a glass of sparkling wine or juice and breakfast snacks before a scenic drive back through the rainforest. If this is your first visit to Cairns, hot air ballooning offers the opportunity for a totally new perspective on the tropics, before you dive into Great Barrier Reef adventures – and the Hot Air Balloon Cairns crew can drop you at other popular places on the way back to your hotel, including Kuranda’s Skyrail or Cairns’ Reef Fleet Terminal. After all, it’s only around 10am – you have a whole day of adventures ahead.
