When it comes to golf tournaments, the Australian PGA Championship at Brisbane’s Royal Queensland Golf Club is a hole-in-one.

The atmosphere will be electric as some of Australia and the world’s best golfers battle it out for $2 million in prize money, making it the richest tournament on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.

So, get your caddy—your family or friends, that is—and read on for our Australian PGA Championship guide, with all the event essentials.

What is the Australian PGA Championship?

2024 Australian PGA Championship, Brisbane

First held in 1929, the Australian PGA Championship is part of the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia—Australia’s top professional tour—and the DP World Tour, a global tour with 44 events in 24 countries. Held in Queensland since 2000, this year will be the fourth year in a row it has taken place at the Royal Queensland Golf Club—Queensland’s premier golf club, known as ‘RQ’.

Players to watch will include former world number one, Jason Day, chasing his first major win on home soil, three-time winner and fellow Queenslander, Cam Smith, and golfing showman and reigning champ, Min Woo Lee.

The golf isn’t the only drawcard here, though. Don’t miss the three-par 17th Party Hole. It’s golf, but not as you know it, with DJs spinning beats and a pumped-up crowd cheering on the action.

There's fun for the kids, too. As well as the chance to become a ‘Caddy Kid’, there’s a free kid’s day with golf lessons and activities, and the Callaway Kids course for youngsters to test their skills.

The RQ is in Hamilton, a 15-minute drive from Brisbane City. There’s free parking throughout the event, but the easiest way to get there is by public transport.  Catch a train to Bowen Hills and grab a free shuttle bus, or travel the scenic way on the CityCat—the fleet of commuter catamarans that cruise the Brisbane River. See the Translink website for details.

Tickets range from general admission to reserved grandstand seating and hospitality passes, with general admission holders able to watch the action from public grandstands adjacent to the 1st tee, 18th green, and public viewing deck at the 17th hole.

For further event information, as well as how and where to buy your tickets, head to the Australian PGA Championship website.

What else to do in Brisbane

Couple kayak on Brisbane River in front of Story Bridge

Riverlife Adventure Centre, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane

Snorkel shipwrecks teeming with kaleidoscopic marine life, swim at an inner-city beach, or experience one of only three bridge climbs in the world – it’s all happening in Brisbane. Climb high above Brisbane River and scale the heritage-listed Story Bridge with Story Bridge Adventure Climb, take a guided kayak tour with Riverlife Adventure Centre, or jet ski it with Jet Ski Tours Brisbane.

Brisbane’s answer to Central Park is the South Bank Parklands. Find yourself lost in 17-hectares of lush sub-tropical garden dotted with BBQs, picnic spots, and the man-made Streets Beach. Adjacent to the Parklands you’ll find QAGOMA—the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA)—home to a world-renowned collection of contemporary art from Australia, Asia and the Pacific.

Looking for day-trip ideas? Explore Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) with River to Bay and swim the Tangalooma Wrecks, 15 deliberately sunk ships teeming with 200 species of fish, or take a country getaway to the Scenic Rim—named one of the world’s top ten regions by Lonely Planet in 2022.

If you’re staying near the Royal Queensland Golf Club and looking to explore the surrounds, why not head to the nearby seaside village of Sandgate. Our tip? Grab fish and chips and head to the Shorncliffe Pier at dusk to enjoy sunset like the locals.

Where to eat and drink around Brisbane

Couple sip cocktails at a window table at Mr Percival's, with views of Brisbane River and Story Bridge

Mr Percival's, Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane

From chef-hatted restaurants to al fresco dining and scrumptious brunches to sundowners by the riverside, Brisbane’s food and dining scene is world class.

If you’re staying close to RQ, fuel up at one of the nearby brunch hotspots, like Pancha Café or Yellowish at Hamilton—see here for our guide to discovering Brisbane’s best breakfasts.

After a day at the golf, take the CityCat to Howard Smith Wharves, a former WWII-era wharf that’s now a vibrant hub of restaurants and bars. Say hello to Italian at Ciao Papi, savour the flavours of Mykonos at Greca, or sip cocktails Mr Percival’s, where Euro beach club vibes come to Brisbane.

Don’t miss The Star Brisbane, the city’s newest landmark, where restaurants, bars and world-class entertainment come together. Head up to the Sky Deck to Cicada Blu and enjoy botanical-infused cocktails served with chilled beats and spectacular views. The Star is also home to Sokyo, where exquisite Japanese culinary delights come with an Australian twist (think truffle-infused lobster, grilled over Japanese charcoal), and celebrity chef Luke Nyugen’s South East Asian street food inspired Fat Noodle.

Oh, and before we forget, Hamilton is also where you’ll find Eat Street Markets (on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4PM). Here you can enjoy street food amongst shipping containers and festoon lights on the edge of the Brisbane River.
