Sweet tooths take note. Queensland is a state with a gastronomic flair, particularly when it comes to desserts. From flaky pastry to decadent cakes, specialists in all things treat are popular in these parts, both in celebrations of the traditional and innovative takes on local flavours and ingredients. These are the best desserts you need to turn your attention (and cameras) to in Queensland.
Fan of Greek food? Make haste for Greca, the Howard Smith Wharves resident from star chef (and Queensland local) Jonathan Barthelmess. Among the list of traditional Mediterranean favorites sits the Chocolate Metaxa Pudding, a creamy concoction paired with halva and hazelnuts. This dish is undeniably one of the best new desserts in Queensland.

Deep in the hills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is where you’ll discover a venue devoted to donuts. The Kenilworth Bakery has amassed quite the reputation when it comes to the fried treat, with the bakery home to an impressive array of donut options, including Australia’s first coffee served in a donut, not to mention the one kilogram donut challenge.
Forget about counting calories when it comes to the dessert menu at Ze Pickle. The burger house, with venues in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast, offers a truly indulgent selection including the famed Oreogazm, a bowl overflowing with deep-fried oreos cooked up in doughnut batter and served up alongside a hefty dollop of ice cream and liquid nutella.
A visit to Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm is a non-negotiable for any stroll through the Scenic Rim. This purple-hued landmark in the middle of a producer-heavy region isn’t just home to fields upon fields of photogenic lavender, but a cafe which crafts the flower into a vividly coloured ice cream.

No food-focused trip to Brisbane is complete without dropping in to Jocelyn’s Provisions, home to some of the best desserts in Queensland. Stacks of florentine and brownies fill shelves alongside savoury treats but it’s the sour cream chocolate cake which has become a Queensland icon. Picture a moist fine-crumbed chocolate cake garnished with sweet white chocolate ganache and candied violets.
Indulge in a true taste of the Sunshine State in Tropical North Queensland’s Nu Nu. The Palm Cove institution famously celebrates native ingredients in its casual eatery which sits on the shores of the Coral Sea. Like the banana, cassava and coconut pudding, served alongside mocha cremeux and scattered with corn crunch.
Intrigued by native flavours? Make way for the Daintree Ice Cream Company, in Cape Tribulation, where exotic fruits are the forte. All the fruit is grown organically on site, then turned into ice cream using only the finest of fellow local ingredients, with no added sweetness promised. While soursop and durian are an option, the true standout here is the Chocolate Pudding Fruit Ice cream.
Forget what you’re thinking - this is not your average chocolate mousse. Burleigh fine diner Restaurant Labart appeases the sweet tooths among us with a truly unforgettable chocolate mousse, a rich concoction topped with a sweet and salty combination of popcorn ice cream, and crushed hazelnuts.

‘Screw the diet’ is the mantra at the Gold Coast’s Oh My Waffle, which speaks volumes. The particularly Instagram-friendly menu here is focused solely on desserts, and decadent ones at that, including the Wafflenator. Picture a golden waffle covered in crushed Tim Tam, cream and ice cream, a waffle cone, and both melted chocolate and caramel sauce.
Tuck into the true taste of Italy at one of La Macelleria’s many venues scattered across Brisbane. The flagship can be found in Teneriffe, where you’ll be greeted by a rainbow of flavours all crafted with natural ingredients in the traditional Italian way. But alongside gelato concoctions of Biscotti e Nutella and Salted Macadamia are the gelato shakes, and the much loved gelato-stuffed cannoli.

Fan of an elaborate cake or two? Then you’ll find heaven in Maroochydore’s Tome. The sweets specialist has amassed a reputation for its truly unforgettable layer cakes, creating customs for birthdays and weddings. But more recently the Sunshine Coast local has found fans its cinnamon scrolls (and specialty takes like the Reese's peanut butter cup) available in store and for delivery.
Throw caution to the wind and treat yourself with the ultimate in decadent treats - the Loaded Doughnut Fries at Brisbane’s much loved outdoor markets Eat Street Northshore. KombiAlley is where you’ll find the dessert stalls congregated, including The Doughnut Bar which serves up bowls of hand cut doughnut fries laden with toasted marshmallows, oreos, and melted milk chocolate.
