Forget what you think you know about the Gold Coast. Queensland’s favourite coastline is teeming with much-loved eateries and landmarks, but there’s plenty to this popular tourist destination that you won’t be aware of, we promise.

From beaches off-the-beaten-path to restaurants that only locals know about, here are some of the best hidden spots of the Gold Coast.

Couran Cove

For some of the hidden spots on the Gold Coast, you'll need your boat. Like the family-friendly Couran Cove, a resort neighbouring a secluded beach tucked into south Stradbroke Island that’s just a 20-minute boat trip from Runaway Bay Marina. Just keep in mind that thanks to no public moorings being available, you will need to anchor in the broadwater.

Kirra Beach

You may find yourself surrounded by surfers when you visit Kirra Beach, the sandy stretch tucked between Coolangatta and Tugun. The point has long been famous for its break, attracting wave chasers in their droves. But the beach is equally enjoyable for those who'd prefer to spend their day spread out on a towel on the sand, sans the crowds of popular beaches like Surfers Paradise.

Snapper Rocks

It’s Snapper Rocks which is held in the highest regard among surfers, the Gold Coast destination which has become home to more than its fair share of surfing competitions. But what’s lesser-known is the fact that the small rocky outcrop on the northern side of Point Danger isn’t just reliable for swell, but a place to grab an ice-cold beer with a great view as the home of Rainbow Bay Surf Club.

Froggie’s Beach

Among the hidden spots on the Gold Coast is Froggie’s Beach, a tiny sand strip on the southern side of Snapper Rocks. While it’s not particularly welcoming of swimmers, this petite enclave has become a favourite among surfers and local shutterbugs thanks to its photogenic rock formations.

Tipplers

On South Stradbroke Island you’ll find another of the hidden spots of the Gold Coast. Tipplers is a resort, camping ground and cafe in one that sits on a quiet stretch of sand that can be accessed by ferry. If you’re after some serenity with the whole family in mind, this destination is for you.

Currumbin Creek

On the Southern Gold Coast, you’ll find another secret gem of the region - Currumbin Creek. This watery stretch reaches from Mount Cougal to Currumbin Alley, where the creek mouth hits the sea. It's a place popular for swimming and fishing, so expect to find in-the-know families of the Gold Coast frolicking here.

Araluen Swimming Holes

If you enjoy time spent splashing around, make your way to the Araluen Swimming Holes tucked into the base of Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Not only is there a fresh waterhole for splashing around in, but a rope swing, and a neighbouring grassy knoll for a post-swim picnic.

Camping and hiking

O’Reilly’s Wishing Tree Track

Immerse yourself in the wilderness with a visit to the iconic O’Reilly’s. Among the array of bushwalks available to enjoy is the Wishing Tree Track, a 2.4-kilometre journey that begins below the main guest house accommodation. This wander is all downhill, passing through forest and bridges to reach the Wishing Tree itself.

Spring Gully

Among the hidden spots on the Gold Coast beloved by adventure seekers is Spring Gully. This Scenic Rim destination is under an hour’s drive from the coastline and a great place to visit for both campers and hiking enthusiasts. Spend your days perusing the walking tracks around, and your nights gazing at the stars from the comfort of your tent.

Larapinta Falls

The more challenging hike to get here means Larapinta Falls is one of the less-visited waterfalls in our Gondwana Rainforest. A six-hour round trip hike in Lamington National Park, you may very well have the place to yourself if you arrive early. Follow the markers and flags along the path at Christmas Creek Track towards Stinson Wreck, then prepare for rock-hopping, creek wading and raw bushwalking aplenty.

Eateries

Custard Canteen, Tallebudgera

Treat yourself to one of the favourite foodie hidden spots of the Gold Coast, Custard Canteen. This place isn’t afraid of calories, with a menu heavy on dessert - picture the likes of ham and cheese croissants, karaage chicken burgers, and baked goods galore, accompanied by coffee and sweet drinks like strawberry jam milkshake - perfect for refueling after a swim in neighbouring Tallebudgera Creek.

Pasture & Co, Currumbin Valley

Venture a little further afield and you’ll greet Pasture & Co in the luscious Currumbin Valley. As its name suggests, this hidden spot boasts green fields of produce and an accompanying cafe focused on local, fresh, in-season ingredients. Drop by for brunch daily from 7.00am.

Hidden Cherub, Miami

The Gold Coast has plenty of waterfront restaurants and buzzing bars that are easy to stumble upon, but one watering hole you won't find unless you're looking is Hidden Cherub. Tucked away in the backstreets where Miami meets Burleigh, Hidden Cherub is a warehouse-inspired space for cocktails, beers, plant-based burgers, tacos and California-inspired tapas from Friday to Sunday. Grab a spicy margarita and settle in.

Wineries

Sarabah Estate Vineyard

Quenching your thirst is also an option among the hidden spots on the Gold Coast. Behind the beaches sits hills rich in grapes, and a booming wine industrySarabah Estate is one of the region’s rising producers, a family-owned vineyard sitting just outside Canungra with a farm-to-table bistro and cellar door.

Open Friday to Sunday, book your lunch at the Chalet Bistro, Sunday brunch, picnic in the vines, or hang out with the farm animals and house alpacas.

Albert River Wines

Or there’s fellow Scenic Rim resident Albert River Wines. If the cellar door and restaurant combo don’t tempt you here, the historic chapel will, a landmark that’s made this destination a favourite among wedding parties.
