Mount Hobwee Circuit, Lamington National Park

Binna Burra, Scenic Rim Area

JOURNEY

Get in touch

This full day hike, the Mount Hobwee Circuit, is in the Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park.

Lamington National Park boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area's forests, creeks and waterfalls. Dramatic lookouts afford views over the Gold Coast, southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, which includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world, most of the world's warm temperate rainforest and nearly all of the Antarctic beech (Nothofagus) cool temperate rainforest.

Trek this 18.2 kilometre circuit, which starts 5.4 kilometres along the Border Track from Binna Burra, and winds through rainforest to the summit of Mount Hobwee (1163 metres) and will take you about 8 hours to walk. Much of the forest near the summit was disturbed by a severe storm in 1983.

The Antarctic beech (Nothofagus) forest found here provides strong evidence of the Gondwana connection. The 'beech orange', a species of fungus, occurs only on Nothofagus species found in Australia and South America.

The circuit re-joins the Border Track for the return trek to the Binna Burra car park.
