Welcome to The House on Lizard Island

Known for its spectacular meeting of luxury, sustainability and adventure on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, award-winning Lizard Island Resort has opened the doors on its most breathtaking accommodation yet. Welcome to The House: a world-class reef house offering guests unparalleled privacy and personalised service alongside barefoot adventure and a genuine connection to nature.

Nestled on a pristine headland of Lizard Island, the new all-inclusive property accommodates up to eight guests across the main multi-level residence The House, as well as The Cottage, a separate single level sanctuary nearby – perfect when travelling with an older child, grandparents, or au pair.

The House is as picture-perfect as its surrounds, with architectural design that heralds simplicity to complement the natural beauty of the island backdrop. Crafted from materials endemic to the land and fitout with local furnishings, artworks and iconic statement pieces, everything feels effortlessly beautiful.

After all, this northern Queensland paradise some 240km north of Cairns is covered with over 1000 hectares of national parkland, and surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. There’s a lot to appreciate, which guests can do from the many sprawling outdoor living spaces that wrap around the headland, including a pool, spa and outdoor shower.

The House is about much more than a house, though. With a dedicated host to curate your escape exactly how you want it, you’ll walk away with deep experiences in this secluded paradise.

Take a naturalist-led hike through the national park, kick back on a sunset cruise then dine on the beach, tour the island’s state of the art marine research station, or turn time-out into a wellness journey with a facialist, masseuse and yoga instructor on hand to spoil you. Explore the estate’s three private beaches, or discover some of the other 21 pristine beaches around Lizard Island – by foot or heading out on ‘Mojo’, a twin 140hp Seaswift RIB that The House guests have unlimited access to during a stay.

Lizard Island

Surrounded by coral, ribbon and lagoon reefs, Lizard Island is renowned for its scuba diving and snorkelling, with some of Queensland’s best dive sites right here. Guests of The House have priority access to the resort’s luxury yacht – perfect for a trip out into the sea for diving, swimming and fishing.

When hunger strikes, call on the private chef and sommelier. The team on Lizard Island is dedicated to showcasing the diverse and exceptional produce and seafood found in and around Queensland’s tropical north food bowl – and can even curate a personalised wine offering to guest’s tastes. Then there’s full use of the resort’s restaurants and bars (plus chauffeured transfers between the resort and private estate) and use of other facilities including pool, tennis court and gym.

While guests could easily fill long days with adventures, The House’s welcome embrace beckons relaxation by the sea. The masterpiece has been a labour of love for owner Steve Wilson, working with Queensland architect Dr James Davidson of JDA Co; while thoughtful interior design by Sophie Hart leans on an impressive curation of Indigenous artists. Add in luxury bedding and custom made rug inspired by the island’s beaches – every luxury and every comfort is thought of.

Luxury to me is more about authenticity and experience than ostentation. The luxury is witnessed in the position of the house, the thought behind the details and of course, the views, but that’s not to say we’ve denied it any luxuries in design and interiors. Every single piece chosen for The House has a sense of place. I wanted guests to be captivated, but also not feel uncomfortable walking inside with sand on their feet.
