Outback Queensland AUS

Welcome to
Mount Isa

The oasis of the outback

Whether it’s your first outback trip, or your yearly pilgrimage west, you’ll want to pull up the handbrake in Mount Isa.

Spend your days discovering why this part of the world earned its moniker with visits to Lake Moondarra, the Leichardt River and nearby (by outback standards) Lawn Hill National Park.

To understand more about the history of this city, you’ll need to go below terra firma.

From visiting a former mine site to winding through tunnels towards the city’s underground hospital, you’ll find that the modern Mount Isa City was built from the ground up through mining and innovation.

Although Mount Isa has big city amenities, you only need to drive outside its borders to find the rugged landscape that makes Outback Queensland so famous.

For a short drive, find peace and tranquillity at Lake Moondarra. Or for something much longer that tests your 4WD’s capability, dip your tyres into Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and its neighbouring World Heritage-listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields.

It’s not just the natural landforms that are bigger in the west. Every year in August, Mount Isa plays host to the largest and richest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.

Considering the city spans some 43,000km2, one of the largest city footprints of anywhere in the world, access to Mount Isa is befitting of a large city.

Daily flights servicing its airport and the Matilda Way and Overlander’s Way drive routes directly connect Mount Isa with the rest of the state.
