Tempted by a country escape? Take to life in the slow lane, temporarily at least, with a weekend spent regional. Conveniently, you don’t need to traipse far from the capital - we’ve gathered a handful of cabins and cottages near Brisbane which will act as a cosy respite from the demands of your day to day.
A beer lover’s haven can be found at Granite Belt Retreat, the cottage escape just steps from the on-site Granite Belt Brewery. On arrival you’ll be greeted by 20 cedar cabins scattered across 30-acres of bushland in the middle of Stanthorpe. Warm yourself from the notoriously frosty temperatures by the log fireplace, whilst sipping on a tasting paddle of owner Geoff’s craft beer - there are seasonal styles and a cider available at the brewery.
Named among the best places to visit in 2022 by Lonely Planet, there's plenty of reasons to escape to the Scenic Rim. And when you do - check into one of the region's newest eco-accommodations: Hazelwood Estate.
This luxury country retreat is situated on a polo and Wagyu farm just outside the small township of Beechmont, on the edge of World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. Settle into your luxury cabin, each with sweeping views, then spend your time fine-dining, at the spa, on a bushwalk, or just taking it all in.
Another Stanthorpe resident, Diamondvale Cottages caters to those craving some peace and quiet. Each of the four cottages available on the property share 30 acres and fringe Quart Pot Creek, promising plenty of serenity. History fans will gravitate towards The Camellia Cottage among them, a century-old repurposed Railway siding. While each cabin comes equipped with a kitchen, cooked breakfasts are available for delivery, and Stanthorpe’s main drag is not far.
High on a ridge in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland's Cooroy, Thirlestane Farm Cottage is the place to go for peace and quiet - especially if you want to befriend a few farmyard animals too.
A country escape that's also only 20-minutes drive from the beaches of Noosa, Thirlestane Farm boasts a renovated farm workers cottage and barn that accomodates up to 8 guests. On 28 acres of land to explore at your own pace.
Deep within the Gold Coast Hinterland is Cave Rock Cottages. The trio of cosy cabins are designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding 100 acres of land on which they are built, on the doorstep of the adventure-laden Lamington National Park. Spend your days bushwalking the district, and your nights stargazing next to the open fireplace.
Find solitude in spades with a stay at Severn-dipity on the cusp of Girraween National Park. The idyllic cottage boasts two bedrooms for travelling with friends, and perhaps even more importantly, an in-house sauna, for soothing your body after a day traipsing the nearby national park or the collection of neighbouring James Halliday-approved wineries.
Drive 40 minutes north-west from Brisbane and you’ll find Turkeys Nest Rainforest Cottages at the base of the aptly named Mt Glorious. You’ll appreciate the view from each abode, tucked into the ample greenery 620m above sea level. Each cottage offers a queen bed, claw foot bath, rainforest views, and fireplace, though best of all may well be the bird seed to help you feed the resident wildlife.

Savour a taste of rural life at the Cedar Glen Farmstay neighbouring the Scenic Rim, which has been in the Stephen family since 1882. During your stay you’ll help tend to the beef and dairy cattle, Arabian horses,, sheep, pigs, kangaroos and poultry across the farm’s 1050 acres. When it comes to laying down for the night, choose between four cottages, each as historic as the next.
Wine enthusiasts will be tempted by Mt Cotton Retreat, which resides just 10 minutes away from Sirromet winery. The lakeside retreats are just one of the many cabins and cottages near Brisbane, joining the likes of Sirromet’s own glamping escape, Sanctuary. But these cabins are better suited to nature lovers, courtesy of the nature refuge in which it sits - home to more than 80 species of birds.
Make way for the Scenic Rim and the state’s second-highest peak to the picturesque Mount Barney Lodge. There’s a handful of accommodation to choose from in these parts, ranging from Queenslander homesteads to rustic cabins, and each adjacent to the World Heritage-listed Mount Barney National Park. Adrenaline junkies will be satisfied with the impressive number of activities available when you stay, from abseiling to guided hikes.
Don’t be surprised should you stumble across a chalet in the middle of the Gold Coast Hinterland. The Mouses House Rainforest Retreat in Springbrook is a cluster of 14 chalets in the middle of the World Heritage-listed Springbrook National Park. Each of the quirky abodes offers impressive views, a fully equipped kitchen, wood fireplace, plasma television, and private balcony with barbecues. But most impressive perhaps is the two person hot tub with views into the rainforest.
On the outskirts of the state’s oldest national park, the picturesque, sits another of the outstanding cabins and cottages near Brisbane. Witches Falls Cottages is a couples’ retreat nudging Tamborine Mountain with private, self-contained cottages tucked into the surrounding rainforest. While food is generally BYO, BBQ dinner hampers, picnic hampers, and cheese plates are all available on request.
Floral fans will be hard-pressed to find a better regional getaway than Homewood Cottages, just 10 kilometres north of the ‘Garden City’ Toowoomba. The cottages border Davidson’s Arboretum (Latin for tree garden), a single hectare of foliage filled with Autumnal trees from around the globe, and a favourite for weddings and events. Conveniently also within walking distance are many of The Highfields District’s eateries, historical sites, national parks and lakes.
Watch the sunset over your own private lake when you stay at Cloudlake Mountain Retreat, just a half hour drive from Toowoomba (or two hours from Brisbane). The 65 acre organic/biodynamic farm property, housed in a secret valley in the mountains near Ravensbourne National Park, offers two self-contained cottages. Both nudge a private lake, and boast decks and verandahs on the water’s edge to make the most of it, alongside wood fires inside and camp fires outside.
