K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) is a place well deserving of your attention. The world’s largest sand island, this idyllic getaway off the Queensland coast has become beloved for locals and visitors alike, and remains one of the Sunshine State’s most popular places for a nature-focused escape.

In good news there’s not only plenty to do here, but plenty of places to stay. From beach shacks to glamping spots, this K'gari accommodation guide will show you the ropes.

Glamping and camping on K'gari

Before you go

Immerse yourself among the natural wonders that have made K'gari such a popular place to visit, pitching a tent at one of the island’s campgrounds. Whether you’re an avid camper or prefer to dabble in the odd glamping experience, you’ll find something for you among this K'gari accommodation guide, with 45 camping areas spread across the island. Keep in mind that each has capacity limits so booking ahead is encouraged, and camping permits are required. Vehicle access permits must also be purchased for every vehicle prior to your arrival on this sandy stretch.

Cathedrals on Fraser

You’ll find options galore at Cathedrals on Fraser. Tucked behind the sand dunes, this tree-studded space makes for one of the most popular campgrounds on the island. Variety is the calling card here - picture a handful of self-catering cabins, powered and unpowered sites should you boast a van, as well as a collection of permanent canvas tents. Not to mention you won’t need to travel far for supplies - it’s here you’ll also find a cafe, a bottle shop and the self-proclaimed ‘best-stocked general store on the island’.

Beachcamp Eco Retreat

Glamping gets an eco-friendly edge at Beachcamp Eco Retreat. Perched just 100 metres from 75 Mile Beach, this site sits safely within the dingo fence. And while it may fall into the camping category, tents here come equipped with all the creature comforts you could require, ensuite, hotel linen, towels and even (eco-friendly) toiletries included. There’s also an array of different tent options to choose from - ranging from a six bed for those travelling with kids in tow, to the Queen tent designed with couples in mind.

Family-friendly accommodation on K'gari

Kingfisher Bay Resort | Best K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) accommodation

Kingfisher Bay Resort

Kingfisher Bay Resort demands a mention in any K'gari accommodation guide. Voted one of Australia’s top 10 resorts, the expansive space melds into the surrounding sand dunes, and offers an array of accommodation options from hotel rooms to self-contained units. Families promise to be entertained by its trio of restaurants, four swimming pools, Ranger-guided walks and Junior Eco kids program.

K'gari Beach Resort

Make yourself at home on the beachfront with a stay at K'gari Beach Resort. Sitting smack bang on the front of the iconic 75 Mile Beach, the resort makes an ideal base for your time spent getting to know K'gari. A haven for families, picture an array of hotel rooms and apartments, joined by a restaurant and bar, duo of pools, and resort grounds which contain the famous Eurong Bakery, where the coffee and bread comes recommended.

Or enjoy the serenity and seclusion of your own private abode with the rental of holiday home Kokomo at Kingfisher Bay. The three bedroom, two bathroom residence has capacity to sleep up to 10 people, making it the ideal place to host your next family focused gettogether. Just 10 minutes drive from the barge, it’s also conveniently placed for your exploration of the surrounding island.

Each of the nine cabins boasts multiple beds, a veranda, ensuite bathrooms, and a kitchenette, not to mention they sit just 200 metres back from the beach.

Fraser View

Fellow Happy Valley resident Fraser View is also a decent option for those on a budget. The residence consists of two separate units of accommodation, each fully contained with two bedrooms to choose from. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from the beach, you can kick back and listen to the sound of the waves from the adjoining deck.

Holiday homes on K'gari

Waiuta Retreat Holiday House

Bordering Unesco World Heritage National Park is where you’ll find the eco-friendly abode Waiuta Retreat Holiday House. This place is ideal for gathering your nearest and dearest with the space accommodating up to 13 guests across its 5 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, a pool table, an 18m deck and a BBQ patio. While conveniently only a minute’s drive from the Kingfisher Bay Resort Barge, you’ll enjoy plenty of privacy thanks to the house being tucked into bushland.

Salty Towers

Make yourself at home at Salty Towers, the three-bedroom pole abode sitting in Happy Valley. With eight beds and the potential to sleep up to 10 people at a time (not to mention a deck on which 12 can dine), this home is perfect for a group focused on getting better acquainted with K'gari. Spend your days enjoying the private access to the neighbouring beachfront, and the easy stroll to the Fraser Island Retreat where a bistro, bar, and convenience store are at your disposal.

Fraser Island Fishing Units

Fishing fan? You can’t go past a stay at the Fraser Island Fishing Units operating on K'gari. As the name suggests, this is the place to stay if you’re searching for the ultimate in reel-led adventures. Sitting in prime position on Indian Head, this cluster of self-contained units is within easy reach of the headland making it ideal for catching tailor when the season arrives. Not to mention there are barbecues provided for cooking up the day’s catch.

Fraser Island Holiday Lodges

Get back to basics with a stay at the duo dubbed Fraser Island Holiday Lodges. Comprising two of K'gari’s original beach shacks, what these abodes lack in (some) mod cons, they make up for in charm. Named Talinga and Weerona, you’ll find this couple of residences situated on absolute beachfront, in the township of Eurong on the eastern side of K'gari. While both are three-bedroom, and boast ocean views, Talinga was built in the 1960s as one of the first houses on the island, while Weerona arrived a decade later.
