Itinerary

By Danielle Reckless

Want to shake up your summer beach routine? Indulge your creative spirit in Brisbane, where a new art exhibition is making its own waves, adding extra cultural power to a city brimming with energetic precincts, foodie hotspots and endless adventure.

Whether you’re seeking an art edge to a romantic weekender or a fun escape somewhere new, here’s a three-day Brisbane itinerary taking in QAGOMA’s Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (open until 27 April 2025) and the best of the city, too.

Friday

Check-in

W Brisbane, Brisbane

A lavish inner-city hotel that feels like you’re on holiday the moment you arrive? Check.

Nestled right by the Brisbane River and moments from the action of Brisbane City and South Bank, W Brisbane’s signature style makes it the ultimate base for an art-fuelled weekend. Especially if you drop your bags and head straight for the WET Deck, a poolside paradise perfect for sipping summer cocktails between dips. Life’s better with a Chandon spritz in hand.

If your style is more tiers of treats than rooftop tipples, book yourself a summer-inspired high tea at the W’s Living Room bar – it’s a contemporary take on the British tradition, kicking off with a signature martini.

Afternoon: get arty

APT11 at QAGOMA, Brisbane.Photo by @qagoma

It’s time for the short stroll across the river to the Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

Now in its 11th edition, The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT11) brings together 70 collectives and over 500 pieces from more than 30 countries in a massive, mind-bending, interactive exhibition spanning both galleries. There’s so many works to discover in so many forms: painting, drawing, sculpture, installations, performance art, film and other mediums. And for the very first time, talented artists from Saudi Arabia, Timor-Leste and Uzbekistan are on show. There are major commissions, never-before-seen works and so much more – don’t miss Thai artist Mit Jai Inn’s 3D installation on the QAG Watermall.

Icing on the cake? APT11 is free, so you can save swiping your card until the gift shop – or your next cocktail.

Tonight: dinner and drinks

Southside, Fish Lane, Brisbane

Cultural cravings satisfied, it’s time to fill your stomach. Head to Fish Lane, a vibrant hub known for its street art, small bars and lively dining. Take in the sights and murals with a wander down the laneway, then grab your table at Southside – an Asian-inspired eatery with a chic indoor-outdoor setting. On a warm night, the best spot is outdoors, under the train line and surrounded by greenery. Afterwards, slink into Bar Brutus, a cosy bar known for its creative Italian cocktails.

Kicking on? Fish Lane leads straight to West End where cocktail bars, local watering holes and live-music joints stand side by side.

Saturday

Morning: Sip, savour, shop

James Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

Start your Saturday with a leisurely breakfast at Bar Miette, a stylish Euro cafe with sweeping river views and a menu that’ll encourage you to linger over a pastry or three (especially with Bloody Mary’s available from 10am). Treat yourself to a croissant and savour your latte while plotting your next adventure: retail therapy.

James Street is Brisbane’s premier shopping destination, home to high-end boutiques, local designers, and luxury labels. But be warned, it’ll tempt the most savvy window shoppers into a credit card workout. If hunger strikes, take your pick of the street’s endless dining options, from exquisite wines and small plates at Cru Bar to handmade pasta at Bianca. Don’t get too carried away – you’ll soon be feasting again.

Evening: sky-high dinner plans

Vertigo Restaurant at Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm, Brisbane

As the day winds down, you’ll be heading up. Prepare for an unforgettable rooftop dining experience at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Vertigo, perched 17 metres up on the side of the iconic former power station. Arguably the city’s most unique way to dine, you’ll be harnessed into a seat that feels like floating mid-air – an incredible way to take in sunset views while devouring a three-course meal from Bar Alto, one of the city’s best Italian restaurants.  After dessert, you can choose to ‘drop’ back down to ground level.

Alternatively, finish the day with an amazing meal at Maya Mexican before checking out Brisbane's best live music venues in Fortitude Valley.

Up late: cinema under the stars

Tonight really is dinner and a movie with a difference. Balmy Brisbane evenings are best spent alfresco, so head next door to Dendy Powerhouse, the city’s first permanent outdoor cinema. With a great lineup of movies and an on-site bar, it’s the ultimate way to unwind.

Sunday

Morning: market time

Milton Markets, Brisbane. Photo by @miltonmarkets

Start your day with a graze at Paddington's Patio by Range, ahead of a stroll at one of Brisbane's best markets.

Each Sunday from 6am til noon, lively Milton Markets offers a taste of true Brisbane flavour, from artisan pastries to fresh juices, a street food alley, oodles of fresh produce and handmade crafts. A short distance from W Brisbane, it’s the perfect spot to soak up local life (and do some quality dog-spotting), grab a light breakfast, and find a locally-made souvenir to take home.

Mid-morning: don your captain's hat

Go Boat, Brisbane

For a unique way to enjoy Brisbane River, hire an electric GoBoat for a relaxed, self-drive boating experience. Take in city sights from a whole new angle, at your own pace – with space to have a picnic as you cruise. All the more reason to buy a few extra snacks at the markets.

Afternoon: one final toast for the road

Felons Brewing Co, Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane

To wrap up the weekend, make sure to leave some time to take in the sights at The Star Brisbane, including the brand-new sky deck

Of course, no Brisbane getaway is complete without a session at Howard Smith Wharves, the riverside precinct where locals and travellers alike perch themselves in the sun with a pint and picturesque view of Story Bridge and the sparkling cityscape. It feels like Brisbane’s backyard, and all are invited to grab a craft beer at Felons Brewing Co. or a cocktail from Mr Percival’s. There’s a handful of restaurants to tempt you to dine as the sun’s reflection dips into the water, marking the perfect end to your weekend.
