International travel may be a go again, but Queensland remains a top holiday pick for Australians, with two coastal destinations featuring in the Top 10 in Wotif’s 2022 Aussie Town of the Year Awards.

The awards, now in their fifth year, are determined by Wotif data that looks at accommodation affordability, quality, and traveller satisfaction.

Sunshine Coast icon Caloundra came in second on the list for good reason, with the region’s countless number of activities making the coastal haven the perfect spot for a summer holiday. Think long sandy beaches, epic surf spots and a bevvy of water-based activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding and windsurfing.

Coming in seventh on the list was the charming town of Hervey Bay, a region famous for natural encounters (there’s simply nowhere better to go whale watching), boating and swimming, as well as close proximity to the World Heritage-listed sand island of K’gari

The domestic accolade confirms that Aussies are keen to explore more of their homeland this year, with Wotif Managing Director Daniel Finch confirming 2022 is set to be a pivotal year for domestic tourism.

“While many Aussies have travelled over the last 24 months, few have had the chance to really explore and travel across state borders. It’s incredibly promising to see that 88% of Aussies planning to travel this year, are looking to stay within Australia, and our hope is that these awards inspire Aussies to try something new and get back to exploring this beautiful country," he says.
