Subscribe to the belief that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Then you’ll no doubt agree that starting your day strong with a decent morning meal and a quality cup of coffee is a non-negotiable. This collection of the best cafes in Townsville promise to fuel you for the day ahead. As an added bonus, you’ll find most can cater to any and every kind of food intolerance or dietary requirement.

Jam Corner

It’s within the dining precinct of Palmer Street that you’ll find Jam Corner, one of best cafes in Townsville. The local institution is well-known for its creative takes on Modern Australian fare, where seasonal, local produce is the star attraction. We suggest the homemade granola, pistachio and cranberry with local Mungalli Creek yoghurt, or the Huevos Rancheros with housemade spicy beans and fried egg.

Where: 1 Palmer Street, South Townsville

Tide Cafe

You can always rely on Tide Cafe for a decent bite to eat while you’re in Townsville, particularly if you’re vegetarian or gluten-free. Sample the all-day breakfast plates like the potato rosti, topped with smoked salmon, and chilli jam, and wash it down with a fresh juice or a quality coffee. There are two blends available from the locally roasted Bounce coffee, topped with Misty Mountains Jersey Milk from the local dairy.

Where: 46 Gregory Street, North Ward

Hoi Polloi Cafe

Hoi Polloi Cafe

Wander your way down Denham Lane and you’ll greet the gathering of mismatched sofas and benches that form the Melbourne-esque Hoi Polloi Cafe. The eccentric space has garnered a reputation as one of the best cafes in Townsville, and most reputable places for coffee in town. There are also ample (vegan-friendly) homemade treats to boot, pumpkin scones and pretzel cookies included.

The Quarters

Self-proclaimed coffee addict? Make way for The Quarters. Caffeine is the specialty here, with each cup produced with a custom blend from Veneziano Coffee Roasters. This place is now well-known as one of the best cafes in Townsville - the passion project of local man Garry Miller who began his hospitality career in the coffee capital of Melbourne 20 years ago. Kids with you? There’s also Milo on the menu.

Where: Bulletin Square, Townsville City

Coffee Dominion

Welcome to the outpost of one of the Townsville region’s most prominent coffee brands. Globally sourced but locally roasted, the coffee beans here make their way to cafes across the country. Try the brew for yourself but be warned it’s best if you don’t arrive hungry - there is no food served here on the side.

Where: 320-334 Flinders Street, Townsville

Born Wild Wholefoods & Espresso

Health enthusiasts will find no better place to grab a bite to eat than Born Wild. The lifestyle-focused eatery sits right in the city centre, serving up heaped plates of wholefoods, with a variety of dishes that cater well to the vegetarians and vegans among us. Salads, sandwiches, smoothies and more form the bulk of the menu.
