Bird Watching in Tin Can Bay

Tin Can Bay, Gympie Area

Attractions

Nestled along the picturesque Cooloola Coast, Tin Can Bay is more than a charming coastal town; it's a haven for bird enthusiasts. Beyond its reputation for fresh seafood, this hidden gem offers significant birdwatching opportunities, attracting enthusiasts from every corner.

This area is part of the Great Sandy Strait and holds international recognition as a dedicated RAMSAR site. Characterised by tidal swamps and intertidal sand and mud flats, it hosts a rich ecosystem comprising seagrass beds, lush mangrove forests, and expansive salt marsh wetlands.

During low tide, vast sandbanks provide ample feeding grounds, while at high tide, secluded spots offer these birds undisturbed roosting and resting areas, making the Cooloola Coast their perfect retreat. Local bird watching groups have recorded sightings of over 143 species (shorebirds and migratory) establishing the foreshore as a reputable spot for viewing.

While also being a sanctuary for various threatened species such as dolphins, turtles and dugongs, you are sure to witness some extraordinary moments in nature.

Regardless of your mode of transport—whether you're walking, cycling, or simply strolling—the 4km Tin Can Bay Foreshore Bird Walk guarantees a delightful day out for everyone.
