Fraser Coast

Welcome to the
Fraser Coast

The world’s whale-watching capital

Visit Queensland's Fraser Coast and be forever changed by raw nature.

Why? It's home to two of Australia’s most famous and visited heritage-listed jewels — the world's largest sand island and the world's first whale heritage area.

K’gari has more than a few reasons why this World Heritage-listed place is a natural paradise. Explore unspoilt coastline, soak in the natural spa at Champagne Pools, touch the powder-like sands and crystal-clear fresh waters of Lake McKenzie, and be dwarfed by nature with a walk through the ancient Valley of the Giants.

Things to do on the Fraser Coast

It's where peak hour is spotting another 4WD journey along the 75 miles of beach. And where by evening, you can settle in at the resort or find your spot on the sand to set up camp.

Expect warm encounters from the locals in historic Maryborough, as well as those a little larger — the humpback whales who visit the waters of Fraser Coast's Hervey Bay to rest and play during their annual migration between July and November. Not just the world's best spot to witness the heart-stopping beauty of these gentle giants, the local community's commitment to sustainability and conservation practices made Hervey Bay the world’s first Whale Heritage Area in 2019.

A little further inland, the picturesque Mary Valley delivers riverine rainforest galore. From the lush splendour of Amamoor to Little Yabba Creek and Imbil, this exquisite part of the Fraser Coast offers different, but no less impressive, experiences to the Fraser Coast’s sandy coastline at 4WD heaven Rainbow Beach, or peaceful Tin Can Bay which delivers a rare opportunity to meet the Australian humpback dolphin.

Looking for cultural experiences? You’ll find plenty here. From Maryborough, the birthplace of Mary Poppins, with its Military & Colonial Museum, Mural Trail and Maryborough Markets to the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and indigenous tours of K'gari, the Fraser Coast offers countless opportunities to experience its cultural side while exploring the stunning landscapes that make it a haven for those with a love of the outdoors.

Whether you're diving into the ocean to explore the wreck of ex-HMAS Tobruk, diving into the local food scene, watching the landscape pass by from a vintage train, or discovering the many family-friendly beaches, the Fraser Coast serves up adventures for young and old.
