The Sunshine Coast may have a reputation for being awash with sleepy seaside towns, but Maroochydore is one spot which bucks the trend. Considered the cultural centre of the famous coastline north of Brisbane, Maroochydore sits sandwiched between Mudjimba and Alexandra Headland, nudging the Maroochy River.
It’s a destination which has long attracted night owls and outdoor enthusiasts in equal parts, with crowds tempted by its combination of beachside and river access and drinking and dining opportunities galore. As for how to spend your time while here, let this Maroochydore guide lead the way.
When it comes to Maroochydore restaurants, you won’t be disappointed by what awaits you. There’s something here to satisfy the fussiest of eaters (much to the delight of families everywhere). Casual fare is the specialty of these parts as are family-friendly offerings - curb those hunger pangs with some pub grub courtesy of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club, or drop by quaint neighbouring Cotton Tree for a visit to The Boat Shed which specialises in Modern Australian. There are also a number of Asian eateries of note around here too - Namory Eatery is a relaxed space devoted to South East Asian flavours, while you can grab your Thai fix at Pum’s Kitchen.
Though sweet tooths may want to make a beeline for Tome Cakes. The Instagram-friendly specialty cake makers focus on decadent custom cakes, alongside their dine-in bakery which serves up sticky buns and doughnuts galore alongside some of Maroochydore’s best coffee.

Options abound for when it comes to where to get your coffee fix in Maroochydore. Murrays on Duporth serves up organic and single origin espresso alongside cold pressed juices, smoothies and frappes. Then there’s the Boardstore where you can grab a tasty Stoker coffee and peruse skateboards all at once. Or Urban Garden, a breakfast favourite housed in a former courthouse. Alongside your quality cup of coffee you can indulge in pretzels, bagels, and takeaway options like coconut-soaked chia seeds.
After something a little stronger? Whet your whistle at one of the local bars or breweries of Maroochydore. Corbins Wine Bar and Enigma Cocktail Bar specialise in tipple. While local micro-brewery Sunshine Brewery is a non-negotiable for beer fans eager to dabble in local creations - sip on the likes of the brand’s Sunshine Jaffa Stout or the Maroochy Cold Lager while you’re in town.
Not sure about things to do Maroochydore? You’ve come to the right place (quite literally) - Maroochydore is a destination overflowing in activity potential. Take advantage of the duo of beaches within easy walk; Cotton Tree is a firm favourite for families thanks to its calm waters, while neighbouring Maroochydore is preferred by surfers and strong swimmers. Though the Maroochy River is also well-worth a visit thanks to its sunset cruises, fishing charters, and aquatic activities galore. Get better acquainted with this idyllic stretch with a Cruise Maroochy tour or make your own adventure with the likes of Swan Boat Hire. If you’d prefer to take in a bird’s eye view of the region, why not splash out with Paradise Seaplanes for an airborne exploration.
Sand-free fun is also on the cards. Among the smattering of skyscrapers and hotels that inhabit Maroochydore sits Holey Moley, a cocktail bar and mini golf course combined. Though it's really bowling fans who are best catered to with both a Strike Bowling outlet, as well as a Spinners Bowl and Bar. If that’s not enough excitement for you, you may prefer a visit to zipline specialty space Next Level High Ropes, which sits in Sunshine Plaza.
Or forgo the action altogether, keeping your activities limited to the likes of a relaxing stroll through the Cotton Tree Markets, held weekly on Sundays, or a visit to The Float Space, the Sunshine Coast’s first dedicated float centre.
There’s no shortage of Maroochydore accommodation, with caravan parks and budget motels clustered around the luxury resorts of the district. If you’re eager to splurge and enjoy all of the extra amenities that you can get your hands on there are an array of luxury hotels and resorts in the area - the self-contained apartments of The Sebel Maroochydore, Aqua Vista and Myconos Resort come highly recommended, as does the boutique Loea Hotel that sits opposite the Maroochy River.
More budget-friendly options for larger groups are also on hand, like Sunshine Towers perched on Cotton Tree Beach, and Kalua Holiday Apartments. As well as a duo of Maroochydore caravan parks; the beachfront Maroochydore Beach Holiday Park nestled against the surf club, and the riverside Cotton Tree Holiday Park, a spot complete with swimming pool.
