The 7 best things to do on Magnetic Island

List

By Kim Barnard

When planning an island holiday, it’s easy to assume you’ll be completely disconnected—from the mainland, reception, and WiFi.

Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island is a big, beautiful exception. This magical part of Queensland will let you switch off - or stay connected - as much as you want.  Whether you’re going for a quick trip or an extended break, make the most of what the island has to offer. Check out this list of seven things to do on Magnetic Island, and experience an island getaway you’ll never forget.

1. Cruise in comfort

Isle Hire, Magnetic Island, Townsville

After checking in at Peppers Blue on Blue Resort, there's 52-square-kilometres of beauty waiting on Magnetic Island - and the best way to see it all is by Topless Car or Isle Hire. With the option to hire for one day, 24 hours, or longer, turn up those tropical tunes and take in the stellar views from the cutest little beach buggies going ‘round.

Upon pick up, conveniently located at the Nelly Bay ferry terminal, you’ll receive a map highlighting the must-see island attractions, which will help you get your bearings. If you’re travelling with children, complementary boosters and baby seats will be provided so the kids don’t miss out on any cruising time.

2. Hike towards military history

Magnetic Island National Park, Townsville

Lace up your shoes for Forts Walk, one of the most popular tracks on Magnetic Island National Park.

Not only does the track lead you to an incredible piece of history—the ruins of forts operated during World War II—but you’ll be able to marvel at the breathtaking views and snoozing koalas on your way up (there’s over 800 over them on the island).

When you reach the forts, climb up the stairs and take in the stunning 360-degree island panorama.

3. Meet the cuddliest locals

Selina Magnetic Island, Townsville

There’s nothing quite like meeting animals that you usually only see in books or on screens - and Maggie is home to one of Australia's largest wild koala colonies.

While you'll probably spot a few in the trees as you experience all the things to do on Magnetic Island, be sure to head over to Selina Magneitic Island and say hello to the furry and scaly creatures of this eco-accredited animal sanctuary (which also happens to have camping and A-Frame bungalow accommodation).

Book breakfast with the koalas, or take a tour that'll give you the chance to meet a koala or a wombat, hold a snake or a lizard, and even feed the lorikeets - this is one of the best things to do on Magnetic Island that'll also leave you with some incredible moments captured on camera.

Selina Magnetic Island is doing amazing things for both animals and the environment. They established and continue to sponsor the wildlife rescue on Magnetic Island, which nurtures sick, injured and orphaned native animals. With sustainability firmly front of mind, they operate with minimal energy consumption. This is achieved by using open tropical ventilation techniques—raising their facilities off the ground, eliminating walls, having high ceilings with fans, and roof insulation.

4. Hit the water to explore more

Pilgrim Magnetic Island, Townsville

There's so many things to do on Magnetic Island, but nothing beats actually getting out on the glistening blue water that surrounds it. Sailing is the island’s ultimate mode of water transport, and there are two excellent options for this experience: Big Mama Sailing and Pilgrim Sailing.

Big Mama Sailing is a family-owned business that loves welcoming visitors aboard their floating home. Their sailing charter explores the island at a range of different times, so you can pick one that suits your schedule. If you visit Magnetic Island during the migration period (from early July to late September), you’ll have the unique opportunity to see Humpback Whales during your trip.

Pilgrim Sailing specialises in sunset cruises and private charters for the ultimate sailing experience on board a luxury 58ft yacht. The friendly crew and menu filled with fresh, local ingredients, make for a delightful day (or night) on the water. Perfect for a romantic outing or a special occasion with the whole crew, this is one to make time for.

Prefer to see the island by your own paddle power? Magnetic Island Sea Kayaks is your way to go, with something for every fitness level. Adventure seekers should head out on the half-day morning tour to the northern tip of the island to discover the rugged beauty of the coastline in Magnetic Island’s World Heritage National and Marine Park. There's also a two-hour sunset option: keep your eyes peeled as you paddle, as there are usually plenty of turtles around the coral beds in Whitelady Bay.

5. Spot the rock wallabies

Geoffrey Bay, Magnetic Island, Townsville

Every evening as the sun sets, the native rock wallabies of Magnetic Island come out to play on the granite boulders overlooking Geoffrey Bay - and they don't mind a bit of human comapny.

While these endearing wallabies are very approachable and seem almost tame, bear in mind they’re still wild animals, so always practice safety first.

6. Enjoy a nature walk

Hawkings Point, Magnetic Island, Townsville

Over 70% of Magnetic Island is protected as a national park, and with a 36-kilometre network of walking tracks there are an abundance of plants and paths to explore. From granite headlands and sandy bays to eucalyptus trees and coral reefs, going for a hike is the best way to soak up every last bit of the island and its culture.

For an impressive aerial of the island, follow Hawkings Point Track which leads you to  the saddle between Rocky Bay and Picnic Bay, offering views over toward Picnic, Nelly, and Geoffrey Bays and back toward Townsville. It's one of the best places to watch sunrise and sunset on Magnetic Island.

Keep an eye out for yellow flowers (in August) and cotton wool-like seed pods (in December), as these flourish on the special kapok plant. This plant was used by Aboriginal people and early settlers for bedding, and can be found on the lower slopes of the island.

7. Snorkel spectacular coral reef sites

Aquascene Magnetic Island, Townsville

Snorkelling Magnetic Island offers an immersive experience like no other, and led by Aquascene's Master Reef Guide you'll discover secluded locations and spectacular sights you never would have otherwise.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced, want to see fringing reef or marine life (or both), a personalised tour will guide you on a serene journey around Maggie's magical waters.

The island's many quiet coves offer the opportunity for DIY snorkel adventures too. Bring your own or rent a snorkel and fins on the island and explore the two dedicated snorkel trails. The Nelly Bay snorkel trail is ideal for beginners looking to spot marine life among coral gardens, while the snorkel trail at Geoffrey Bay is more suited to stronger swimmers and older kids. Here you can snorkel over relics including a German Moltke wreck which sunk in 1913, along with lots of big fish.
