If there was a single word to describe the Gold Coast it may well be ‘diverse’. This district south of the Queensland capital of Brisbane has long been tempting visitors in their droves, crowds lured to the coastal stretch by its healthy population of beautiful beaches, world-famous surf breaks, and lively nightlife scene. Throw in a burgeoning restaurant offering, and unforgettable natural landmarks and you have a destination that’s well worth an explore, especially if you prefer to travel solo. There’s no need for a crowd or company here, where a week’s worth of adventure is readily at your fingertips.

We’ve come up with a 7-day itinerary for the solo traveller which embraces the region’s best offerings.

SkyPoint Climb | Things to do alone on the Gold Coast

SkyPoint Climb

Day 1 - Surfers Paradise

No trip to the Gold Coast is complete without paying a visit to Surfers Paradise, arguably the region’s most famous resident. A tourist favourite since the 1920s when Brisbane hotelier Jim Cavill purchased 10 hectares of land on the beachfront that’s since been named the more apt Surfers Paradise.

This is a precinct that has quite the reputation for its nightlife, but it’s not just a sanctuary for the self-described night owl. These days Surfers is equally overwhelmed by options for the adrenaline junkies - spend your days taking in the view from up above courtesy of the Skypoint Climb, a 270 metre clamber up the iconic Q1 building from level 77. Though arts enthusiasts may prefer to pay a visit to HOTA (home of the arts) which plays host to live music, exhibitions, and movies, among more.

It’s in Surfers Paradise (or nearby) that you’ll also find the bulk of the Gold Coast’s hotels - make yourself at home at the likes of The Langham Gold Coast, The Star and The Island. Though accommodation for every budget can be found around here (promise).

Day 2 - Minjerribah (North and South Stradbroke Island)

Half Day Dolphin & Stradbroke Island Tour, Australian Kayaking Adventures | Things to do alone on the Gold Coast

You don’t have to stick to the mainland when exploring alone on the Gold Coast. Within arm’s reach sits Minjerribah, the twin islands of North and South Stradbroke that were home to the Quandamooka people ('people of the bay'). While these two idyllic destinations are worthier of a lengthier visit, it is possible to bid them hello just for the day thanks to an array of Gold Coast-based operators.

Make your visit to the islands an especially memorable one with an immersive foray through local operators Jet Ski Safaris and Australian Kayaking Adventures. Both teams embark on a day-long adventure to the rather rugged South Stradbroke Island, home to a 1800-hectare conservation park and endless eye-catching coves and inlets.

Day 3 - Burleigh

Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre Walkbout Tour | Things to do alone on the Gold Coast

Today you’ll make your way to the Southern Gold Coast, and the food-favouring suburb of Burleigh. A hive of activity all week through, this precinct is a hub of foodie-friendly offerings, from breakfast right through till the early hours. Among the best things to do alone on the Gold Coast is the chance to savour a meal in solitude at one of the region’s best restaurants - Burleigh is home to the likes of fine diner Restaurant Labart, and its neighbouring bar Paloma. It’s also worth taking the time to visit its beachfront eateries Rick Shores and The Tropic at The Burleigh Pavilion, with both establishments perched on the sand of the stunning Burleigh Beach.

It’s not all wining and dining, but you can get your culture fix at Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre, the Gold Coast’s only dedicated Indigenous cultural centre. They host a daily guided tour around Jellurgal (‘Dreaming’) Mountain in Burleigh Heads National Park, sharing creation stories followed by an Aboriginal smoking ceremony.

Day 4 - Currumbin

Surfing in Currumbin with Surfers Paradise in background

On the cusp of the Queensland border is the town of Coolangatta. If you’re a surfer you’ll be all too familiar with this part of the Southern Gold Coast thanks largely to its global reputation for consistent swell. Snapper Rocks is a must-visit for the wave chaser, with the surf favourite and the adjoining Rainbow Bay Surf Club a great option for things to do alone on the Gold Coast.

If you’re not quite craving the fare of the surf club, you’ll be delighted to hear that there’s a burgeoning number of Coolangatta eateries. Drop by Francie’s Pizzeria on the main drag for a bite of woodfired pizza which has amassed a cult-like following in the region. Bar Evelyn around the corner is a more recent addition, a late-night dive bar with snacks and specialty cocktails.

Day 6 - Gold Coast Hinterland

Lamington National Park

Hit the road to the Gold Coast Hinterland. This luscious region inland from the skyscrapers promises to provide some respite from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast central. You’ll need a car, but just an hour into the rolling hills and rainforest sits a cluster of ancient national parks, vineyards, farmers markets, and more which number among the best things to do alone on the Gold Coast.

If you’re a bushwalking fan you’re in luck - this place is overflowing with wandering potential. Pack a sense of adventure and some decent shoes and take your pick of a lengthy array of hikes for every fitness level. Lamington National Park and Springbrook National Park are a duo of particular favourites thanks to their ample trails winding through prehistoric foliage. If you’re up for a challenge take part in the three-day journey, the 54 kilometre Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk in Lamington National Park. Though you are just as welcome to keep it more of a leisurely stroll in nearby Springbrook, where the Natural Bridge Walk resides, where you’ll greet the famed cave illuminated by glow worms.

Make the most of your time in the Gold Coast Hinterland with a night’s stay (or more if you’re so inclined). The family-operated O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat launched back in the 1920s and pioneered eco-tourism. Today it remains a popular accommodation option, thanks to a collection of 48 self-contained villas which sit on the cusp of national park. Or indulge in a stay at the studio apartments at the Binna Burra Sky Lodges, tucked among the mountains.

Day 7 - Gold Coast Hinterland

Sunset over the McPherson Ranges

O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat

Treat yourself on your final day of a 7-day solo explore of the Gold Coast. Perhaps surprisingly to some, this place is Queensland’s fastest-growing wine region and home to a rising number of vineyards. Pay a visit to the likes of Cedar Creek Estate or O’Reilly’s own Canungra Valley Vineyard to taste local creations for yourself. Or forgo booze altogether and embrace the region’s holistic focus - it’s in nearby Tallebudgera Valley that you’ll find the acclaimed Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat. The multi-award-winning health resort focuses on the detoxification of mind, body and soul and offers the chance to visit for the day, or immerse yourself as a part of its multi-day getaways.
